BUT, we play covers so most of the time you have to cover the song as recorded filling in dynamics of parts recorded by Keys or a second/third guitar or get caught playing a campfire version! lol

Yeah I mean I really don't have a philosophy per se, I more just go with what feels and sounds right, or what sticks after repeated playthroughs.

For example, on one of our tracks, on the third pass through the verse riff, it just occurred to me to only play part of the riff each time, and it's pretty striking when the bass drops. The guys liked it right away and it helped break up the monotony.

Hey guys,

I just ran into a hiccup in my "must customize all my Spectors in some way, shape or form". :hiding:

Lots of you have seen my refinished Euro 4LX. I had decided that I would sort of take that bass for a left turn and bought a pair of Aguilar PJ pickups and an Aguilar OPB-2 preamp to give it a different sound. Well, my tech realized today that the Aguilar pickups are not going to fit without some additional routing. I guess between the very tight/precise Spector routing and the EMG cover size, they just don't fit in there.

So, two options:

1. Route on a refinished bass, which I kind of hate to do.

2. Add the OPB-2 preamp to it. Here is my question, are there some wiring diagrams or instructions on putting the Aguilar with the EMG pickups and the way they all attach. Will the volume and balance pot I got from Aguilar work or will I need to a different volume and balance pot? Any help is appreciated.

Andrew.....start with an old dod fx25 or 25b envelop filter, it's a one trick pony but available for 25-40 used so it will give you a great idea....flea used that pedal a lot. People tend to love it......there are better ones out there, but it's cheap and easy.....lol

Yeah it's always cool to change things around or change a note in the pattern using one that still fits a chord with the keys/guitar....

so it looks like im going to fill in a night with some friends of mine that play country. so im trying to get the ns-94 a little more tame on the growl :hiding: its there and there's nothing i can do about it. they can deal with it, but i got it sounding nice and fat. needless to say while i get bored after learining about 10 country songs, i decide to bust out some grand funk railroad. man i wish mel could go back and play all his tracks over with a spector. man, that would be monstrous!!! kill the jazz bass!:hiding:

Actually, since almost all my basses are radically shaped, I learned that the factory placement on the X shape is where it belongs to eliminate neck dive.

BTW, does anyone call the X shape Spectorbirds? That's what I refer to it as when I am talking to other musicians.

Actually for legal reasons... meaning anything "Bird" with that shape belongs to Gibson... that's where the X-Shape came from.
Spector can't call them Spector-Birds.
That's a popular name for them that many fans/owners use. Which is fine if it's a private person doing that.
But Spector won't ever be able to acknowledge that nickname.

One of Nikki's famous basses is on this page of the Official Spector Company website. They had one knob and the "opti-grab" bracket behind the bridge that obviously he likes on all of his basses.

I shot this footage of a friend of mine, his name is Ethan Farmer (I shot his album cover and the photos on his website), he's performing with his cousin Dammo Farmer.

Ethan is the guy out front.

He's using an MXR envelope filter in this video (with an Aguilar amp-rig... he's an Aguilar and MXR artist).

This is an extreme version of what the right bass EQ settings with an envelope can create.

Yeah. I wouldn't re-route this.

Some NS-2A owners run into this when upgrading to new EMG active P/J pups. I did.

If you have new EMG pups with the quick connect connector you'll have to cut the connectors off and then strip the wires. The wires are pretty strait forward.

You might check with EMG and see if they have a pickup wiring diagram that's older and doesn't show all the quick-connect stuff.

Another option... ask your luthier/tech about this...
If your Aggie pups are only off by a few millimeters... you might be able to shave the housing.

Just check with Aguilar to see how thick that housing is. You may be able to shave enough off to get the pups to seat without any issues.

This is what I eventually did to get the EMGs in my NS-2A

I love the grain and flame that is on this Spalted top. The set up was great out of the case and a very nice weight...Not heavy and not light..Just right at 8lbs ;) This bass was definitely worth the wait and I am a true Spector convert now :D :D :D
I started researching Spector last year with the one Bass to rule them all mindset. I was originally going to get a Forte but I have only played slim neck profiles since I started playing Bass in the 80's. I played a friends NS2 back in the 80's and remember saying: This Bass is Bitchen man!.....but...The neck is to fat for my hands :( Fast forward to last year and I got a chance to try out a Euro Wimbish and I was hooked. Spector tone, great combo of woods and a slim fast neck. Since I liked the look of the Forte's plain fretboard and matte finish but loved the neck on the Wimbish, I decided to create my version of a Forte/Wimbish.

Dude. I realize you've already heard it like 20 times today, but it can't really get old, can it? You're bass is one of the most elegant builds I've seen out of the Czech shop. Tasty choices and masterful outcome. That truss cover is the icing on the cake... enjoy it!!! :bassist:
