I drove a Highlander until last year so I was in that mindset of not worrying myself. My fiancee has a Tucson but it's not always available to me, plus it has a Red Wings license plate holder.
The bass came stock with EMG DC's and the BT preamp. It sounded great, but I noticed how much more balanced the B string seemed with the other strings when played acoustically vs. when I had it going through my amp. It's like the B lost some punch, or oomph when plugged in.
I read up on the 18 volt mod, and then found this on EMG's site:
Single-Coil Pickups for Bass:
The output from a bass guitar is higher than a 6-string guitar. SIngle-Coil
EMG Pickups such as the EMG-J models will work fine with a +9 Volt supply but
if you play aggressively 18-Volts is recommended.
Also, if you use any EMG EQ products, like the BT, or BQ controls and use a
generous amount of boost the signal will be cleanest with 18-Volts.
Dual-Coil Pickups for Bass:
Dual-Coil Bass Pickups like the EMG-CS and DC Series should be supplied
with 18-Volts. The amount of output from slapping the lower strings will
benefit with more headroom. As above, if you use any EMG EQ products,
like the BT, or BQ controls and use a generous amount of boost then the signal
will be cleanest with 18-Volts
I'm sure this is old news to most of you Spector-ites here, but I had zero experience with EMG's before buying this bass. So I finally got out the soldering iron and did the mod. Slapped two brand new batteries in there and wow.... Big improvement!
I admit to being guilty of playing with a rather hard attack. (Moreso medium, trying to work on it
) I like to thump on the B string, like to dig in a bit when playing fingerstyle. This has made a big improvement. The B string sounds really balanced with the other strings, seems a bit clearer, keeps the low end when thumping it. In fact the tone across the board seems quite a bit more clear and open, sort of like I took some cotton out of my ears. All settings on my amp were the same, same old broken in Labella strings, etc.
I read up on this mod a bit, and saw in other threads where people said it made little to no difference. Maybe it's how I play, or the particular make/era of the circuitry in my bass, but I noticed an immediate difference. It's definitely not a placebo type effect. I plan on doing the same thing to my four string CRFM to see if I notice the same difference. Anyways, just thought I'd share.

Thanks Patrick. Yeah, I'm a little concerned about that with this track but it hasn't been mastered yet so we'll see. The other one I put out earlier you can hear the bass MUCH better. Hopefully PJ's old buddy from the day (Jim Ebert) can work his producer magic on it.

EXACTLY. And boy does she hate Kaner with a passion. It was not a happy Sunday in my house when he scored the tieing and shootout winning goals against the Wings.

I think it's a great testament to your versatility that you can pull that off. I've thought about trying to do studio work from time to time but I'm just not sure my skills will translate outside of a rock/metal setting.
You know I was just playing through Overture 1928 on Jammit, and it gets to that measure of sextuplets I think before it goes to the chord progression from "Strange Deja Vu", and I'm like "screw Petrucci and his lightning licks".
I'm just about there now, but it's a tough run for sure.Just hand her a raw squid and tell her to go sit in the corner
I've been a good guy and actually have taken her to Detroit a couple times to see them play the Hawks - Hawks won both times.

Totally! And I've been on this big kick lately reminding many of the artists I talk to daily that have band drama that the key is remembering that you are "Playing Music" which the key word is to "PLAY" and have fun. "Making Music" is a job. It's like going into the office. And who wants to do that? We all want to play when you think about it. That's why music is so awesome.
My guilty pleasure is Bruno Mars......"Locked Outta Heaven" it initially reminds me of Sting.....the vocals and muted bassline........i like it so much I learned the bass and some other parts!
I saw this at the grammys and the next day I was working it out. By the end of the day I had it down. Love the bass line in that. THAT is a FUN song to PLAY. Short and sweet but has a bass line that is a lot more than just a synth afterthought like many "pop" artists produce these days.
Ha! I have you beat! I had this huge furniture console with a lift open top and speakers built into it that played... ready... 8-tracks and vinyl. My first 8-tracks were Kiss Double Platinum, Love Gun and Boston's first album.
My first vinyl record was Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds... but I had everything from Physical Graffiti by Zeppelin to Prince's 1999, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and yes.
My first cassette? Styx - Paradise Theater.
My first CD? Nothing Like the Sun, Sting.
Yeah, chicks were into them. One of my big loves in high school 9th grade had life-sized posters of them on her bedroom walls. LOL.
But John is an amazing bassist and often to me the best parts of anything Duran did was the bass lines Taylor came up with.
And on yet another topic, I saw some mention at the end of the last thread about using Hipshot detuners and needing to lubricate the nut. I tried installing one on my Webster this weekend and I could not get the low B to tune right at all. I'm wondering if the nut was the problem.
Has anyone hear had luck using a Hipshot with a low B specifically? I usually get about 3 wraps around the post and that seems like too much for the shorter post on the Hipshot, so I'm also concerned about having less wraps for the low B.

Thanks guys. I never really took my playing seriously until the last year or so, about the same time I sold the Wicks and bought my first Spector. Coincidence?
It's been baby steps, but I'm making a lot of progress with my playing. I've recently been asked to collaborate with different people, so the work is paying off. It's fun to just finally share something, but I'll have some actual songs soon if all goes according to plan. Andy, I'll check out Jamstix when I get home. It's amazing what can be done these days. Thanks again for the EZDrummer tip!

Ooh that looks badass. But the head is silver...unless I hear good things about the MB Fusion 800!
FYI that GK 412 does not have any side handles, great sounding cab but had to get rid of it it was to hard to move without those side handles.
