To add to the personal tone discussion. It's one thing to play at home in a sterile environment picking on every single part of the sound spectrum. It's another to play in a live situation either in a jam or on stage. Get the tone YOU love, what YOU are comfortable with, plug it in to whatever amp you wish and let it rip!!! For my ear it's the Spector with US9V with Ampeg. Case closed. I am confident I don't need to go on an endless road to search for something only to come back to it. But that's just moi.
I totally agree with on the sterile environent and then the live situation. I'm really trying to find other options for making one of my euros different from the other. There has been good feedback but until I wire it up and try it in my live situation ill never know if it will be what I want . Buy sell trade till I do .

Nice tracks Sam, OBP's are my second choice for sure, With the TP I felt like I was working too hard to get my tone. The BQC is very versatile but that took a lot of tweaking also.
Thanks for the comparos. It's the best, most comprehensive reference I've seen posted here. I'm holding out hope that a Forte-4 USA 9V or NS-2/Wimbish neck is in my future.

it's not so bad anymore. I'm 35 and have had 3 but only because of medical conditions that warranted it. the prep is the toughest part and the fasting for 24 hours. probably not the best idea but I went and got fried chicken and waffles as soon as I left the office. I was freaking starving.
10 years ago you had to drink a gallon of vile liquid to prep. now it's like 24 oz and not nearly as nasty.
Good to know. LOL about the chix & waffles! Living in the cow-town that is Denver, it took a while for the craze to hit here, but now they're everywhere. I just tried them for the 1st time yesterday at an upscale favorite of ours, and I loved 'em! I'll have to limit my new chix & waffles habit to 2x a month, or odds are I won't live long enough to even worry about a colonoscopy...
It's a colonoscopy ferchrissakes, not a disembowelment!

Great assessment, and my thoughts/feelings exactly.
I like the sound of all my Spectors, and each pre has its place in the recording & home practice toolbox.
My EMG-equipped CRFM offers up some crisp slap tones, my Tonepump-equipped Euro offers up punchy mids & a well balanced tone, and my US 18 volt-equipped USA NS-4 has a thunderous bottom end like no other.
But..
When I play live, there is nothing that can touch the the sound of my NS-2.
All of my Spectors sound good at home & on tape, but live, with several hundred watts behind me, the US 9-volt comes to life & proves to me every time why it is the Holy Grail of Spector tone.

A superb choice. The Fortes are sublime. That said, I've been contemplating the jump from my forte4 to a forte5. That low B is speaking to me again. I can't really afford both so I might be in market to trade up.
And once those US9v pre's turn up again, one will be taking up residence in my green Euro4.
