I brought your old black 435 along but it had just gotten a new nut and set of Cobalts. My natural 435 had some broken in Boomers, so it worked out better.

I'm thinking of putting flatwounds on my Spector when I take it in to the shop to do the initial (And long overdue) setup. The guy is going to do the action and reattach a loose ground wire I found when I opened up the electronics case.

While I love the Spec it's just absolutely too mix-cutty for my style. I do play metal and rock as my main styles but I have a more classic-rock Geezer Butler approach to playing, which include a lot of "bubbly" fills and to-the-beat legato arpeggios on the high strings that still need to thump a bit. I haven't been able to maintain a really woody, almost fretless quality with the EQ knobs if I cut the top end off. I'll repeat that I don't want it to have a P-Bass sound, but at the same time it's really got a hell of a lot of tone. I've also never tried flatwounds on my own basses, although I have played them before (mostly on fretless basses) and my fingers seem to prefer it.

As an aside I never do slap/pop. It's not from a lack of trying, and I can do some real basic octave work, but I'm just not wired to appreciate it.

Do Spectors play nice with flats?

Maybe I ought to sell a Fender or three and try a Spector.

Is there a beginners page to Spector FAQ's?
Like describe the tonal differences between a PJ vs. Soap Bars and set neck vs. bolt on.
Lastly, how far up the ladder do I need to go to get the true Spector sound?

I just sold 2 fenders and bought 2 Spectors. My Rex Pro came last week, Tone is amazing. Its been upgraded with EMG DCs (has EMF HZs) and a Tone Pump (not sure what pre they come with ?) The Rex Pro is Korean like the Legends. The day after it came I got an amazing deal on a SN4 CRFM (Chez Republic Flamed Maple) which is the older version of the current Euro series. That one drops Friday!

Im Chez so I always wanted a Euro ! If you do some looking you can pick up a Euro for under $1000.

I will save you some money......seriously.......go straight to a Euro unless you have a spare $2500-2800 to go straight to a USED NS-2. I say this as alot of longer term members will tell you that you can save yourself alot of money and time and go right for the big gun.

I have had Euro models that I put Spector (haz lab contracted, some old school know it as HAZ, but we try to maintain the usa9volt circuit) 9volt pre in a a humbucker model I put the usa 18 volt Spector pre in. That might get you 95% there and save you some money.......however ......purists will tell you to go straight for the NS-2 if you can.

Lee (Husky123), Sam (Limaguy) JPSbassist, Worshiprocker, Jeffplaysbass, Bunkaroo....just to name a few.....many others can help you out. There is a wealth of knowledge within the club..........feel free to ask alot of questions..........there are also multiple websites that will give you descriptions of construction and youtube video's of tone.

There is soooooooooooooooooo much you can learn and find out out the Spector world! Good luck and welcome aboard (potentially)

warning #2.....you actually might prefer the Euro necks(coming from fender profiles), as the US model necks can and are apparently a little chunkier, except for maybe the early Brooklyn and Kramer era years......

IN! Wowzers Bunk! That's going to be one amazing looking Spector. The Abalone inlays was a great choice. Once done and in your hands I beat you'll see tones coming out of the Abalone that'll compliment the Ultra Violet color. It'll be eye popping! Beautiful quilting!

Where have you been?!?! Missed ya on here bro! :)

yes, well said.

here's how I basically look at the used market on spectors. this is if you want the classic NS2 or Ns4 sound. so I'm leaving out bolt ons and extended range basses. each of these will get you the Sound to varying degrees of authenticity. once you get to an NS2 the extra money gets you fancier finishes and inlays and Woodstock made basses. I prefer the necks on the Kramer and Brooklyn basses but the quality of the new Woodstock stuff is the best ever.

if your budget is sub 500: old NS2a. you get solid maple construction, neck through, most of em have been upgraded to active EMGs. if its got EMGs, it will have the sound.

700-1100: used euro, euro lx, or NSCR. the preamp makes a difference. if you get one with a tonepump, ask if it has a trim pot. the non trim tone pump is, in my opinion, a defective design.

over 1500: used forte or NS2O or SSD era NS4. these are all American made spectors and a big step up.

over 2000: used NS2 Kramer or possibly brooklyn era.

over 2500: used Brooklyn, used Woodstock NS4

over 2800: used Woodstock NS2.

I'm going to second that little fact about the older ns2a's........they rock and you can get them for $450-600 used.......maple and alot of times with EMG's and the korean haz circuit copy..........good stuff!!!! I forgot about them and I had 3........two were white!
