Heh heh... back in the day playing 4,5,6 nights a week I had a remuda of 4-5 sets of strings that (if not new) were freshly boiled clean and put on the bass an hour before the show. And usually once a week I'd break a string and that would take out the set from use so I'd have to buy another set or grab one out of the last batch I bought. I played very aggressively with a pick, and the 50K watts of lights made me really sweat.

Now that it's a hobby and I play mostly with my fingers I haven't broken a string in many years. I don't boil any more. Just replace when they start sounding dead. Which is every couple of months. I kinda envy guys who can go a year or more with the same set of strings.

I never break a string, well I did break a string once and that was years ago...but...I'm also guilty of running the strings until they are dead, I'll pull them off and they will have fret marks on the bottom side. I have gotten better at this but I could still improve especially when my band members can tell when I changed them by telling me that my bass has great tone again! lol

I understand your hesitancy. Just letting you know every Spector I've owned I bought without playing and I've never been disappointed. It's rare for a Spector to pop up here in ABQ. Have to get'em where I can. There may be the occasional used bass that's been abused but generally they're all good players. If you watch the classifieds here, Spectors will pop up that club members here have either owned or played and can vouch for the bass and the seller.

I'm not trying to talk you into anything. Just letting you know how thing go around here. We're glad to help in any way we can.

I've never heard of someone comparing about a bad Spector so my expectations are high, I just don't like dishing out that much cash. Some time in the future when I'm less concerned about expenses I will probably stop by the Woodstock shop while the wife and I are on a road trip were trying to plan out. I have once before seen a Spector, legend I think, in one of the shops here but I didn't have time to try it out. Wish I did though.

Well the good thing about buying one used, is if you don't like it, you can probably always sell it for what you paid for it. But I don't think you won't like it. \m/

My thoughts exactly. I tried them on my Ric, but the Spector is even snappier.

I am usually good for about a month too and then my E string is pretty much dead but the rest of the strings seem to have some life left in them. I tend to rest my thumb on the E string when I am not using it though so that might be why I am killing that string much faster than the rest.

I tried to take a picture of my NS-5 outside today but my photography skills are just terrible and I guess a green bass tends to blend in with the grass a bit as well :)

Thanks. I've had the Woodstock NS2J SE bolt on for nearly a year and am still lovin it as well. The OBP-3 preamp and EMG pickups are a fantastic combo. It's taken the place of my other jazz basses as my go to for deep smooth and solid mids work. Think of it as a Fender Jazz on steroids and smashed into a Spector shape then slathered in impeccably selected and finished highly figured walnut.

My Rex5 Spectorbird still gets the ultra low and extra deep fundamental work and it just loves DR Black Beauty strings. It's a great look under stage lights, constantly changing colors.

I'm still trying to find a place in my music chain for the Euro LX, the non trim tone pump just isn't doing it for me. I've tried numerous string types to see if something really fits well and haven't had any luck yet. I had a lot of hope for the cobalt strings but they just accentuated the upper mids and top end way too much for me, not to mention the extreme drag on slides really negatively impacting my playing style. I yanked the cobalts off after only a few minutes of playing and now have have Elixer nanos on it. It sounds good and feels great with silky smooth slides. I think I've come to the conclusion that the tone pump will have to go, but I'm still torn between the OBP-3 and the USA 18 volt or similar copy. I still need to temporarily rig my OBP-3 up to 18 volts to see if I like that even more than the already great stock 9 bolt set up I have in the NS2J, if so that would put the Aggie option ahead of the Hazlab option.

I had a Spectorcore for about 2 days a few months ago and decided it just wasn't for me, so back it went.

My next Spector purchase will most likely be a Stingray PU configuration, then I'll have all the basses covered.
