I understand this too. When my primary gig was playing for a church band (basically a cover band), you can get stale because you are playing the same style of music. I always loved when we played a funk or gospel song because that is my weakest area of playing. So I always enjoyed that :)

I like the songs we pick in the cover band and think we do a good job at covering them with a wide variety...everything from America, Bryan Adams, Creed, Eagles, Kiss, Led Zep., Ozzy, Pink Floyd, Rush, ZZ Top, etc. I think we have a little over 60 active tunes we move around and I also have worked up 137 contemporary Christian tunes (when I say work up this means sitting with the tunes to create the tablitures because they don't have the sheet music for the bass). I just remember a time when I was up on my scales....

Ya know I'm not really sure. I've only had the non trim TP before and didn't like it. Even if I get a new Euro I'll get the Aguilar option. Just not a TP guy.
The EMG is clean and punchy. What I liked about that bass is that in both positions the J pickups sound great and authoritative. I haven't really found that in other designs that are similar.

I don't remember the price I sold mine for but I think it was 900? So just depends on the condition. Great great ax.

That is a issue also trying to find the right guys to play the covers that are interesting and fun is a hard task. A lot of bands here play all the same crap and if you suggest anything they can't learn in five minutes is taboo. I like to play covers in the original project I have going on and I think all bands should create their own music to complement the covers. Guys that I have played in cover bands in are mostly in it for the status vs. the music. Just my experience, create good music and you will have no draw to play covers unless it is a tribute or something you respect. Tribute bands are cool though just not a fan of jukebox bands. Enough of that, too sensitive a topic for some.

I do like learning the fretless bass playing the parts as recorded, I am learning something new but I noticed I also developed my own method while I covered the songs using my fretted bass...I always got 'I didn't know you knew how to play fretless' after we covered Ozzy's Mama I'm comin home and all I could say was 'I don't know how to play fretless' because it was just me sliding and adding textures on a fretted bass....until now!


I don't like to play the campfire version of a cover tune, there are bands around this area that do this...or...the lead guitarist just plays scales rather than a Eric Clapton lead during one of his songs, just doesn't sound right dude! lol

I'm good with most anything you'd hear on the classic rock station (although now that classic rock stations are playing stuff like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, there's exceptions I'm sure).

I'm sure you will have fun and maybe if it leads into a band situation then you might have a better chance at providing some leadership or direction in song selection...but...I would like to cover some Tool in the band but I also know that in the clubs around here it just wouldn't work so I can only enjoy them on my own! lol

Yeah I'm not going to bother asking for Opeth tunes! LOL. I've been trying for probably 6 years now to get a like minded group of individuals together to do original stuff - I have tons of riffs and skeletal song structures laying around, just have to find a couple guitar players and a drummer who are on the same page and have the time to devote to it.

Of course I can't speak for Joplin but here in ABQ my band plays Tool - Sober and it goes over quite will. Just pick the right song. I'd love to do Schism but that's not going to happen. (I don't think :smug:)

Or at least one HOT, HOT, guitarist and a drummer...then bump you up in the mix to cover any voids! weehee....

I do get asked to cover Tool when I have there T-shirt on, my guitarist has even asked me to change my shirt because he gets requests....hummmm....wonder if Prison Sex would go over??? lol

We play 4 sets starting with the dinner/party tunes so people can get there drunk on, the second set is about the same mixed with a little Ozzy and dance songs, then the last two sets are mixed up with some Rush, Pink Floyd, Ozzy, Alice in Chains along with some of the dance songs...if we play a short set for a party with a bunch of bands we load it full of the heavy songs...

Last cover set I did, we played in the parking lot at Whole Foods (all 5 of us were employees at the time, circa 2006). We played "We Die Young", "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap", "The Prisoner", "Breaking the Law", "Peace Sells" and "South of Heaven" before the store got phone calls from angry residents of the neighborhood and shut us down, LOL. Good times!

I hear that. we start with 70's, 80's more danceable stuff and move up to the 90's, 00's as the night progresses.
I just don't think going from Talking In Your Sleep straight into Them Bones is going to work. :D

Our favorite spot for Sober is at the end of the second to last set (we do mostly 4-5 set nights). That's when the most people are there.

Another surprisingly popular song the people even "try" to dance to is Rush - Red Barchetta. :bassist:
You just have to wait for the audience to be ready for some music that no other band is town is playing.

My last cover band was all 90s to current radio & hard rock and was a blast. I've never been a huge fan of the "60's to today" thing but I know it sells so good on you folks that can power through and do it for me lol. Over the years I've found if I don't really dig the tunes even when it comes to covers I just am a miserable person.

If I were to list my favs I'd put Sober first followed by Schism and so on. But for the clubs here? Sober's about it.

Tool is a phenomenal band but with a very cult following. We like to do 2-3 songs in a night that we call showcase songs that show off the talent of the band but still have some sort of connection to the audience and Sober is one of them.

We used to do The Pot, I even had my JC fanboy pedalboard replica down to the Bass Whammy.Made a fortune when I sold off that board lol. Needed those to get the solo right and we also did Stinkfist because every band in town does Sober here. I think I still have a live recording of Stinkfist I'll post it tonight if I do.

I played in a band with two guys who were Tool obsessed for a long time.

Ten Twenty Kill

(Though that isn't a Spector bass, that's a Carvin XB75)

I tried doing different stuff with the bass (slap, etc) to try to make us not sound like a Tool cover band but it was kind of unavoidable. Always made me kind of uncomfortable to be honest.

I penned Null in a different band years before and was able to reuse it for TTK.

I wish we could get away with that stuff. Not a real sophisticated crowd here. :help:
