Can anyone address how the NS-JH5 might compare to the Euro5LX in terms of tone? I like the Euro5LX, a lot, but I've been using bolt-on Ps and Js and other similar basses for many years. I wonder how the pickups in the NS-JH5 might compare.

The newer versions have the EMG TW single-dual coil tapping pups and the Aguilar OBP-2 Tone Circuit.

It's going to sound different... cleaner than the Euro5LX. Especially if your Euro5LX is a pre-TW model... the Euro5LX models also come with the TW pups.

What sort of tonal difference are you looking for?

The great thing about the USA Bolt-ons is that you can custom order them. So if you want one with the EMG MM pups, or dual J pups, or PJ pups... or even DC pups... And you can order a 9v USA Tone Circuit for the bass too.

I'd say that unless you were looking at a used one, in which case you can change certain things to affect the tone after you get it, decide on the sound you'd like, and let PJ work with you to build a bass that will achieve that tone for you.

I was thinking about that NS-JH5 listed on Bassgear.com for $1200. It has the J/MM arrangement, but I don't know what preamp.

Honestly, as much as I like the Euro5LX w/EMG DCs and the Tonepump, I'm finding it to be a little dirty for my taste. Even with a fresh battery, I have to keep the volume controls rolled back about 50% or I start to hear quite a bit of distortion. My gain structures are set up just fine, so it's not the super-hot output overloading the inputs to my DIs, amps, effects, etc. Mine doesn't have the adjustable gain version of the TonePump; just the fixed gain. I should try another fresh battery just to be sure.

Perhaps I should swap out the DCs/TonePump in my Euro5LX for the TW/OBP-2 and see what happens? Or maybe just swap out the TonePump for an EMG BQC system.

Too many choices!

I had this same bass (NS-JH5) except it was fretless. It had an Aguilar OBP1 in it. I decided to replace it with an EMG BQS. It was a good move. Not sure why I got rid of that one though. :(

I almost pulled the trigger on the 1995 SSD NS4. The guy selling it seems very reasonable and is pretty quick to reply. It's a great looking bass. Someone needs to snatch it up to get it back in the club.

BTW, has anyone ever noticed that the US SSD era basses look more like Euros than current US basses (bridge, neck volute, taper at the end of the fingerboard)?

You know, I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that the Czech basses ARE what the USA basses used to be, more or less. Rather than do what most US companies do when they produce overseas models, Spector upgraded their USA line to set it above the Euro line, rather than dumbing down the Euro line.

I'm sure there are still small difference (such as the TonePump), but overall, it seems the Euro basses are very much what the SSD era USA basses were, and the current USA basses are even better now. That's my take, anyway.

I totally agree with this, I think that is one of the very cool things Spector did.

That is a SSD era NS5P (Piezo). TB member Tommixx currently owns it. Another of of those I'm not sure why I sold (dang GAS). :rollno:

Wow. Opening the case and seeing it took my breath away. My wife is laughing at me... she said my eyes were wide like a pirate opening a treasure chest. LOL.
