Hey guys. I've had this Spector Legend Classic for about 10 months now and I'm an absolute believer of Spector. My second bass I've owned and not planning on buying another bass for a long while. But I am thinking about upgrade the pickups and the preamp/tone circuit soon and Im not really sure what I should go with for either. EMG pickups definitely but not sure what kind and for the preamps either. Any advice would be nice.

There is currently a used TonePump on Bassgear.com for $60. They run about $100 on the Spector site.

The problem is not the length but the width of the body.
Your NS5CR will be a tight fit, if it fits at all, in the 4 string case.

The neck thru's have the issue as it's the same sized wings on ever increasing width neck planks, thus making the bodies increasingly wider. All the bolt on's will pretty much fit nicely in the 4 string case as the bodies stay the same width. Just the necks/pockets change.

I've owned all three cases. My neck thru 6 wouldn't fit the 5 case, The 5 wouldn't fit the 4, etc., but my old Legend 6 fit the 4 string case perfectly.

Thanks for the input but I have a '89 Kramer NS2 and the NS5 CR
will fit in it's case. It is a little tight in the body area but it fits. My NS5 CR is a transitional model w/34" scale and the reacquired Spector logo so maybe it's the same width as the NS2 bodies.

P.S. I guess it's about time to post some pics and ask for a number. I've owned about a half dozen Spectors and am currently the proud owner of said '89 Kramer era NS2 and '98 NS5 CR. ;)

I ran a search but couldn't find a definite answer so I thought I'd ask;
Does anyone know exactly when the legend classics switched from basswood bodies to all maple ones?
I got my classic 5 used, and I'm curious as to what body wood it has. It won't really make too much of a difference though, I'm already sold on how awesome this thing is.
Also, if I email Spector's customer support with the serial # can they tell me when my legend was made?

With the Korean imports it's more difficult to tell the exact age... PJ Rubal might be able to give you an approximation.

He'll be out of his office until Monday. He's at Summer NAMM in Nashville.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the maple body switch from basswood happened mid 2009-late 2009. When I was building the SPECTOR website (early 2010) PJ had to confirm that the switch had gone into effect. So I'm pretty sure it wasn't too long before then.

But I admit I could be wrong about the timing.

Thanks a bunch JPS! I'm fairly sure this thing is from late 2010/early 2011 based on when the seller said he purchased it.
I had my local shop do a setup (as I have been known to screw those up horribly) and it plays even better than when I first received it. Something tells me it's going to be with me for quite a while :bassist:

My old NS5CR would also fit in my '88 NS2's case, but the cases were different back then. Is your case the current form fitted model? Mine all currently are. Your NS5CR should be the same size roughly as a current US or Euro neck thru. The manufacturing methods of the bodies haven't really changed (other than the laminates). The scale just got longer.

Good luck. If you get a current 4 string version I hope it fits for you.

PS. If you do....and it doesn't, I currently have a NS 4 string sitting in a 5 string case that's a little loose. I might be interested in a trade. :D
