Spector Club - Part 12

Question for you 5 string Spector guys. What strings do you all use on yours? My Euro 5 has the original Spector strings on it so I want to change them out but can't decide what to string it with.

I have another (non Spector) 5 string that I put DR Hi Beams on and the B string seems a bit floppy but that bass is 34" scale so that might have something to do with it. Plus, I am spoiled by the Spector B string so nothing I tried has compared to it so I have to factor that in as well. The Spector strings have a .130 B string so I was thinking about possibly trying DR Lo Riders with the .130 B string and the Lo Riders have a higher tension than the Hi Beams.

The one thing about the Spector strings also is the E string feels like it is thicker than the usual .105 but nothing on their web site seems to say what size it is. It just says .45-.130 but I was just curious since the DR's I was looking at have a .105 E string. I have seemed to have good luck with DR but I am curious what everyone else is using.

Same finish as on my Euro 4LX. That Matte finish is really amazing. No stickiness on the back of the neck.

P.S. Let him know that Dunlop 65 works perfect on cleaning it. (It is recommended by Spector for Matte finishes)

Also eventually the Matte on the back of the neck starts to get shine in the areas where the thumb lands most often. But it still feels slick, I have read this is normal.

I meant BQS or BQC..
The BQS is the System which is the S in BQS). BQC is the controller only version that comes w/out the pups from what I read on EMG's website.

My NS-2J has the BTS in it.

Just string tension. The fingerboard is just slightly longer and the frets are spaced just a little differently... it's all about math... don't ask me. I'm good with math but the formulas for fret spacing isn't anything I've ever cared to know... LOL.

Basically if you're going to do drop tuning such as drop-D or C or you want a 4-string that's tuned B,E,A,D instead of E,A,D,G... this is the way to go.

My Euro4LX-TW-35 is B,E,A,D and honestly I love, love, love it.

It's a sick beast. And I love that I don't have to play a 5-string to get my low-B string.

I've thought that with as much drop-D as I do a 35" P/J E,A,D,G would be cool.

If you're going to go Standard or Eb, the D'Addario EXL220-5s are your best bet.

if you can, take the neck off and pack it in a smaller box. USPS is your cheapest bet international.

I like Dr hi beams, in 45-130. D'adario's sound good also. Blue steels are popular too. Never had an issue with a floppy b . I think its more in the bass. My ns5cr was a 34" scale 5 and still had an awesome b. About the same as most of the 35' s I have played. Any thing you like in a 130 or 135 should be fine. There's a lot of talk about circle k strings on here as well. I haven't tried them but they have me interested.

I think the biggest difference will be the feel of the strings. The longer scale will be slightly tighter feeling. Kinda like the difference in light vs. medium gauge strings. Second to the feel of the strings will be the sound. The tighter strings can have a little tighter sound in general. This isn't always desirable, though. Shorter scales can have a bit more "bounce" to the sound, for lack of a better term. Not sure how to describe it, but it's sort of a springy "boing". The tighter strings settle out to pitch a bit quicker, so the attack feels/sounds a little different.

As far as I know, Spector's 35" basses simply move the bridge back an inch and the pickups move accordingly. This also means the end of the fretboard is moved toward the butt of the bass and extended by an amount proportional to the scale (about .75" at the 24th fret), which means the last-fret access is limited on the 35" Spector compared to the 34". However, the reach to the first fret is nearly identical.

Some 35" basses have the nut moved an inch further from the body compared to their 34" equivalents. The difference in those would be more noticeable, IMO.
