Spector Club - Part 14

I always come here to lurk but don't post as much as I use to. Just wanted to say hello to all my Spector loving brothers and sisters here.

JPSBassist - First off, great work with the websites!! Second, I'm really jealous (in a good way) of that beautiful collection you have going on there! Cheers!

First thing that came to mind while reading your post....

I was gonna have some fun and photoshop you over the pic of George Costanza (from Seinfeld) posing on the couch in his underwear... then photoshop that in front of your pic of your basses above the couch ... but..

Funny thing I had the same thought about Costanza when I posted it.

You wouldnt have insulted me as long as you didn't put any non-Spector basses near me. :D :rollno:

The healing powers of Spector:

Ok so I tore up my knee pretty good, a trip to the ER and a day later its swollen to twice the size of my other one. Had ice on it all day, ibuprophen, the works , still swollen. So I'm sitting there with my leg proped up and decide to put in some time learning covers for this new band I'm in. 30 min of playing later...the swelling is gone! Cool! Thanks Stu!

Well I got a chance to test out the new pups and tone pump at full volume and all I can say is WOW..... I'm very happy with the upgrade!!! Everything fit very nicely and no problems. Now I'm wanting another spector with the tone pump jr and p/j setup.... so I can keep it fresh :)

That's great! I had a similar experience, had dislocated my knee and popped it back in but still was sore swollen and not too functional, sat on a stool for rehearsal right in front of my amp, by the end of the rehearsal I was walking around fine, there was barely any swelling left.

Music cures wounds! Though I wish it had worked when I had 6 stitches in my left pinky...

OK guys, I need some input / suggestions;
I am ready to make a deposit for a new Spector NS2 but the only thing that is holding me from going on with it is the fact that I can't make up my damn mind about the finish!!

*I own a Forte 4, so I want something a tad different*

I first wanted the Spalted Maple (in natural oil finish) like the one that was on sale at Bass Central, but then I realized that this particular one is has more burl in in than spalt (:confused:) and after seeing a lot of other basses tagged with "spalted maple" that look nowhere near that same one on BC, It kind of turned me off.

Then, this dude we all know as JP... posted a picture of his brand new NS2, so I thought hmmm....that with an oil finish (I just don;t like gloss...) and Pao Ferro fingerboard and black hardware, that would be SEXY!!

Then.....It was a few Buckeye Burl ones that REALLY turned me on. Now the issue at hand is that with exotic woods, the finishes and final "wood pattern" will differ quite a lot.

So....opinions? Patrick, would it be possible to get the finish of your NS2 in natural oil, or would it look too much like my Forte 4? And also, would they be able to find a spalted maple wood that has a ton of pattern in it like the one shown on Bass Centrals site?

I am so torn.........;)

A quick answer would be that the quilt maple when finished in natural oil or a matte poly, which is what I'd actually recommend... your Forte has a Matte Poly finish... if done in a lighter color or something like the black cherry, would look awesome and look considerably different than your forte.

Typically the Buckeye is going to be gloss coat finished. I think the buckeye has a fair amount of spaces and gaps that need wood filler in it and so it's harder to keep stable with the matte poly. I've seen one or two at most done without the gloss. And I can check with Jimmy, who does most of the staining at the workshop to be sure.

Another thing, your dealer of choice, they will be able to show you the exact set of wings you'd be getting. Not to open a can of worms, but there is a secure, dedicated Dealer-Only website that the current unfinished available wood is on display. You'd need to sit down with your dealer and they could log in and show you what wood is available and let you pick it out. That goes for quilt maple, spalted maple, buckeye, any current available wood for wing construction.

SPECTOR doesn't expect you to drop $5K+ on a guitar that you have no idea what the finished thing will look like and just hope that it's OK.

I did this with the Black Pearl... meaning I personally asked Stuart to hand pick the wood and that I didn't need to see or approve it ahead of time. I told him I trusted his judgement.

Now Buckeye is a different matter. It can look SO different from guitar to guitar. So you'd really want to be involved with that.

So anyway, back to the wood gallery, once you make your selection and put your deposit down the wood is reserved in your name and the construction of your guitar scheduled. It's marked "Sold" in the gallery so no one else can also order that same piece of wood.

Talk with your Dealer and ask them about seeing available wood for wing construction. :-)
