I only asked because no picture I've seen shows the body from an angle that would show that the body is contoured like an NS-2, versus being flat on the back but with rounded edges like other cheaper spector models, its really hard to show aside from a picture pointed straight at the bottom strap button like the pictures JPS posted to show the contour of the USA models.
If it was flat backed I wouldn't be interested, but since you say it is contoured like an NS-2 (hard to describe shapes with words eh?) I'm gonna have to try and snag it.
The USA bolt ons are not as contoured as the original NS bass is but the curve is there.
Thanks to Peledog, I should be getting a big box in the mail tomorrow. Soon I'll have the credentials to join the club! I'm sure I'll have some questions.

A US Spector for a Sterling? Pounce before the other party comes to his senses!
I was asking about an NS20004 because I have not seen much info on them around. The picture JPS posted only showed NS body legends, USA bolt-ons, and Euro/USA fully carved NS bodies.

Hey guys, I was just wondering what options I have for preamps for my Spector Euro 5 LX. Right now it has the tonepump in it and I'm not a huge fan of it. It doesn't sound too bad, but it's just too much. I seem to be clipping my preamp lots, and my speakers don't like it. Neither do my ears.
I'd like to get an aggressive sounding preamp, but don't really know where to start looking.

What year is your Euro5LX?
If it is post 1998 the clipping/hot output issue was corrected by adding an output trim pot on the actual unit itself.
This video explains everything and shows you step-by-step how to adjust it.
If you have an older TonePump (one without the adjustment pot on it)... then the Aguilar OBP2 is a good place to start. And there's always the USA SPECTOR 9v (four pots like your Euro5LX has) circuit.
You could also put an EMG BT or BQC circuit.
You've got plenty of great sounding options. First check and see if you can adjust the output on your TP. If you can, you're gonna dig it once you cut that output down.

Also, this clipping seems to have just started up randomly. When I got the bass (used) it was in great shape, and sounded awesome. I wasn't even considering changing the preamp until this randomly started happening.

The dates are 2008... not 1998. Sorry. So if your bass is a 2006 model it WON'T have the trim pot.

Watch the video anyway. I can tell you that I love the TP. It's really an awesome circuit. And the video explains why. You can upgrade your TP from SPECTOR for less than the Aguilar OBP-2... Not sure about the cost on the EMG circuits. But it's worth looking into.
Once you watch the video you'll understand why your bass is so hot and clips when you play it.
It's not blasphemy at all.
The OBP-2 and the TonePump both use JFET circuits to amplify the signal from the pups. There's a harmonic shift and slight distortion that's been purposefully programmed into the TP to give it a gritty-growly sound more like the Op-Amp-based USA 9v circuit (Haz).
The USA 9v Circuit in the NS-2 actually is so articulate and has it's unique sound because HazLabs used multiple Op-Amps in it's creation and the over-saturation turns into a slight distortion instead of signal loss. Most other manufacturers just add another 9v and push more energy through the whole system, which reduces resistance and takes care of the problem.
I think the OBP-2 is a great circuit... it's a little clean for me at times. Sometimes I've noticed it isn't AS growly... but it can sure be growly if you set your EQ right.

Is my preamp basically useless now? I understand that some people leave the preamp on the bass flat and do all of their tweaking from their amps, but why would they design a preamp that is way too hot but can't be adjusted?
