I'm afraid so. I've been keeping an eye open for a spector for a while. I saw this one on ebay and I pulled the trigger. The upgrades peledog did are what I would have done. After I committed to buy, I discovered this forum. It seems you guys have a great community here, hopefully I'll be able to contribute to it.

Is my preamp basically useless now? I understand that some people leave the preamp on the bass flat and do all of their tweaking from their amps, but why would they design a preamp that is way too hot but can't be adjusted?

Below are links to the usual Pre amps that you could put in.
I have each one of the Pre's below.

The EMG BT will be the least expensive overall.

But don't outrule the TonePump with the Trim.

The aguilar sometimes clips my amp when the bass is boosted, but it sounds great.

You will also be able sell off your current Tonepump for around $40-$50.


I know this sounds stuipid but in the meantime

You can try turing down volume knobs and see if you still get a decent sound

Such a beautiful bass, too bad you couldn't play it before making your decision, I really think you would be blown away by how it plays if it plays like the USA bolt ons I have played.

I got a kramer era NS2A and I recently put on it EMG-X and they sound very good. I highly recommend them. I'm not using them with a preamp though...

Like I said, I have a set of active EMGs I'd like to install. My NS2A has the Haz copy (which is active), so in theory, I don't have to do anything but connect the pickups to the power circuit, correct? Pots are part of the preamp circuitry?

Just went this route myself. After playing around with the EMG BTS system in the NS2A for a while I felt it was a little on the clean side for my taste, but the TP really brought out the Spector growl with the EMG p&j actives.

I'm looking forward to A/B ing the trimpot version of the TP with the non trimpot version. My Euro 4 has the non trim, but my Euro 5 will have it. I know the pups are different, but I'm curious as to how the trimpot version reacts with my ears with the gain cut a bit. I've been debating on changing out the 4's pre to either the newly updated TP or putting all the chips on the table for the Haz.

For those with both versions of the TP, do you find you can match the sound from the non trim TP with the trim version? Maybe with the gain dimed? I'm just wondering if any other changes were either made or were a result of adding the trim.

Awesome, thanks a lot, guys. I know that my bass is an 06, so it will in fact have the trimpot. I'm gonna check the video out when I get off work and hopefully get this done tonight.

Also, this clipping seems to have just started up randomly. When I got the bass (used) it was in great shape, and sounded awesome. I wasn't even considering changing the preamp until this randomly started happening.

...might sound weird but are your strings dead? Sometimes when I play with dead strings they give off way too much low end and clip my amp at it's normal settings.

Been using my Rex5 a lot lately... Something about the way you have to play it(tbird style basses) makes it such a beast. In a good way of course. It almost makes me want a Forte5x if it wasn't so heavy and had more of a cutaway on the bottom

For someone who has never played a t-bird style bass, can you describe that a bit more? Just curious since I keep looking at used Rex basses and get the bug to pick one up every now and then.

No, I gave it to a luthier friend of mine. But the pickups came with instructions and a diagram.
