I've been looking for photo or video proof that for a time Michael Anthony of Van Halen rocked several USA NS-2 models.
Of course it's well documented that Eddie Van Halen owns several vintage SPECTOR basses. But it's been hard to find photos of Michael Anthony rocking one.
Thanks to former Kramer finish master George Felise, I have that proof.

Seriously, starting somewhere around the 3:30 mark there is no mistaking that Spector growl. Lol, I dont care what anyone says, it's unique!

That tour was my first concert...I don't remember a Spector at that show...not that I would've known, lol
Do you guys like to play with the bass controls flat? Or do you guys bost n cut stuff on the bass? What's your favorite for the growl? Pick players especially.

Spector basses seem to have that "growl" as part of the overall tone.
I tend to set my pbass pup at 95% and my jazz on full with a bass boost and about half the boost of the bass for the treble. My amp has the hi-mids and bass slightly boosted with the treb slightly cut

As for my settings on my legend, I leave things flat and use a slight treble boost on the bass for more bite. On my amp I usually work with everything flat, with a little bump in the low mids. If I want more smoothness and less bite I'll cut treble and boost bass to varying degrees. But No matter how I tweak it, it still sounds like a Spector.
Finger style player here. I almost always have the bass and treble about halfway between all the way up and all the way down on my Euro5LX. I also usually have the neck pickup in single coil mode and the bridge pickup in dual/humbucker mode. volumes on both all the way up. Unless we're in our oldschool Motown set. Then it's all neck pickup in humbucker mode. No bridge pickup and I use my thumb with palm muting for that deep deep thump. It's a chest rattling good time. I usually have my amp, GB Shuttle 9.0, set fairly flat. Maybe a of boost in the lowmids if I need to cut though more.
Back when the Spectors I had, had the various Haz, Haz copy or EMG pre's that all were 2 band boost/cut, I played with them at the center detent, flat 99% of the time.
Now I either have Tone Pump or OBP-1. The OBP-1 is in my 4 string EMG PJ. That runs about 30% Treble and about 60% bass to be comparable with my 6 string that has the Tone Pump and EMG DC's and runs 30% Treble and 30% Bass.
Inherently, the DC's are a little more mid scooped and bottomy compared to the PJ's that have a little less bottom and more mid punch.
I'm changing out the OBP-1 for a Tone Pump this week so we'll see how that alters things.
I start with the controls at the center, use the amp to dial in my basic tone, and then use the bass/treble boost/cut as needed on the fly.
Fingers here! Legend 4 Neck @100%, bridge @75%, bass boost 100%, treble @25%. Amp set bass 8, mid 8, treble 8.

back when I was a pick player, I just turned up everything full bore on my bass, I found I liked the sound of the really hot signal coming from the bass into the SVT. Now being a finger player, I start in the middle and make small adjustments here and there...

New. Bass. Day.
My new rebop showed up this morning. It is a new instrument, but it's clearly been hanging on the rack for awhile. It needed new strings and a cleaning, but it's a fantastic bass.
I'm guessing it's new old stock, as the preamp looks to be the older variety. It's got a very hot output and that distinctive Spector growl. I'm also finding that the bridge saddles are bottomed out on the E string, and I can't quite get it as low as I'd like. Anyone got a solution for that that doesn't require shimming the neck?

Regarding the bridge saddles being bottomed out.
(very interesting) on the ReBop I had and any ReBop photos I have seen the Bridge saddles are usually set higher up then the Euro series because of the pickup and neck being higher off the body. Does the neck relief appear to be ok?

Are the Rebop bodies slightly more elongated that the neck-thru's? I've seen several Rebop pics that give the impression that the body is slightly stretched about where the neck pickup is....just seems longer through that section than Neck Thru's. Is this fact?
