Spector Club (Part 2)

**Random thought of the day**
The other night I was playing a set with one of my Euro 4s. I've always loved the Spector sound, and I push that by dime'ing everything out and playing with a pick (sometimes). LOVE that growl!! But, for some songs you need some other tones, so I backed the treble down a bit and dialed in a slight more Jazz that P, playing finger style.....and thought to myself (mid song)...I LOVE THIS TONE!! This is a stock Euro with the TonePump and I LOVE IT!!!
Thats all.

Brooklyn era, dual jazz pickups, BadAss bridge... mmmmmm...

Good price too, especially for a Brooklyn made - the headstock has seen better days (used as a battering ram, perhaps? :hmm:), but the rest of the bass looks pretty clean!

I have heard different takes on these Legend Classic basses, but for a modern tone, this bass rocks out.

It plays great and with the bass and treble at 10 it sounds good to me.

Best $300 I have spent on a bass yet.

Gotta love Holoflash!

Question for you Homer,

You have the exact same 5LX Euro I just bought, right down to the Black Cherry color. Can you compare and contrast it to the ReBop that you have?

Thanks

Hi vegaas - hard to define to be honest - they do sound different to my ears and I would say my Rebop is noticeably warmer sounding and less 'aggressive' than the Euro. It's a lot lighter too, which is why I usually gig with the Rebop.

The Euro has an ACG02 preamp in it and it's completely transformed the instrument - I can't recommend them highly enough. I still get the 'Spector sound' in buckets but since the ACG was fitted, I get a lot more besides. It's so versatile once you get used it.

One of the main reasons I installed the ACG was I don't like two volume controls on a bass. It's much easier to adjust things on the hop with a single knob.

Does anyone know what angle the string saddles should be in relation to the strings? Some pics show the saddles 'flat' and parallel to the strings and some are angled sharply - probably reducing the area of string contact.

Does it matter or make any difference to the tone / sustain ?

i don't know if it makes a difference in tone but i do remember reading on the spector site that the saddles should be at the same angle (although opposite) as the headstock. i'll look for it.

I've got a question, I'm considering the Spector USA Ns 5H2 - EX with the buckeye burl top as my next purchase (after some dramatic saving). I play... everything. I have a way cheaper spector, so this would be quite the improvement. Do you guys think this would be "main bass" worthy? http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend...20019&src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=223947276

Oh most definitely! AND with the Aggie in there, you'll be able to cover anything with that bass.

BTW, if you have to ask if it's "main bass" worthy, you need to turn in your number!:p

Here is my Legend Custom that I picked up from Bass Emporium in November. It is very solid, has a thin neck, and has a great finish. It seems more solid than the Classics I've played, and it's sound is more mellow due to the set neck.

who uses there Spectors for Jazz and Funk?

Obviously these make great rock basses, but how do they fit into other situations?

I'd check out 'Fight For Your Mind' by Ben Harper - Juan Nelson plays a Spector on most (if not all) of the album. It don't get any funkier than that!

There's also a youtube video floating around where a bassist is playing an old Spector with dual Jazz pickups in a quartet playing some standards. Sounds pretty good!

I'd say that Spectors fit in any situation that calls for an aggressive sounding bass. I'm not sure how they would in smooth jazz (I would probably choose a Sadowsky or MTD for that style myself), but they sound excellent for finger-funk & downright UNREAL when slapped IMO. If you are talking fusiony jazz, they are great for that.

If you want maximum versatility, the Spectors with soapbars pickups are more versatile IME than the P/J setup that you usually associate with their 4-strings. The P/J-style basses can still be versatile, but they are a little hard to tame sometimes. The soapbars can get deep and smooth without too much effort, but still growl when you want them too.
