Spector Club - Part 7

HAHA I love that advice!! ;) I really wish I could get both. They're so awesome and each have their own draw. It's a tough call because I know how special those two wenge models are. And technically the RXT is a "production" model, even though I doubt you'll see tons of them stocked up at the Spector dealer spots across the US. I think Beaver told me last summer when I was inquiring about the RXT (not sure if it was even named that yet back then!) they didn't plan to stock it, so if I wanted one it'd have to be a custom order.
My only drawback for the NS4 LTD is that it's almost too pretty to play. I realize basses are just tools to make music and all but that's the problem I had with my ex-MTD 535 in the awesome green/yellow/green "Rodman" finish. I was scared to take it to gigs, and BARELY got it to church on Sundays haha. I didn't want to mess it up or get it dirty it just looked so clean and striking. This particular NS4 is the same way. I'm not worried about wiping down Brownie after every show b/c it's already worn in and not all fresh and clean, and with the RXT I'd probably be the same way.
On that NS4 LTD I'd lie awake at nights wondering if I got any nicks into it during the gig earlier that evening! ;)

Happy to renew my participation here, starting with this thread.

Here's my Performer 4 DLX in Matte Black that I bought off of EBay back in May of 2007:
The first thing I ever bought from there and the best deal I've ever had for $216 after shipping!

Sorry for the crappy cell-phone pic. This is the best that I can get from it and it doesn't do justice to the top.

The Matte finish really makes it for me. I understand that not all of them had a matte finish on both the Body & Neck like mine.

Yeah, those SSD/HZs are the least satisfying part of the deal, but a bit of EQ'ing on my Korg AX1-B Multi-Effects livens it up.

Someday soon, I plan on moving up to at least a Matte Finish Euro - What I have now is comfy, but the full-on NS curvature is what I really want!

Who has a Euro in Blue Stain Matte that they can show us?

The thumbnail of the Upper Horn in the Color Options section of the Spector site is all I've ever seen of that particular color, and I've gone as far back through these threads as Page 22 of Part 5.

Patiently awaiting a number for the Club and thanks in advance. :)

Two things to consider if you ever want to move between BEAD and EADG. The nut slots are different sizes for the two. So if you want to switch you'll need a replacement nut in both sizes.

Bridge Saddles. Anyone who has changed a set of strings on a SPECTOR® knows that the strings will eat a small groove into the metal of the bridge saddles. If you have your bass setup with BEAD at any time and switch to EADG, the grooves will be a little larger (a hair) and you will have to adjust your bridge saddles to compensate.

You'll have to do this anyway because of the guage difference. But you'll need to think about those fractional differences in the saddle grooves.

So here's the deal ... buy the NS4 LTD, have it shipped directly to me and I'll play it for a few months to get it all worn in and then I'll ship it off to you so you don't have to worry about being the one to pop it's cherry :eek:

I know the feeling man. The red stain on figured maple top on my Rebop is pretty much what I've always wanted in terms of colouring and look. I used to baby the **** out of it and always kept it in a Coffin Case. Unfortunately I took it out one day to realise it had two pretty deep looking scratches behind the bridge, plus another where my picking hand usually rests on the body.

Needless to say I was mortified and didn't actually play it for a good few months. Got it back into action when I started playing in Nerrus Kor, and it's gotten a bit more beaten up since (steel roundwounds eating the frets, back of the neck and sides of the fretboard getting dinged up, more scratching on the butt), it all adds character though and I don't mind anymore.

Summary: Scratches and dings on a pretty bass may not be easy to fix, but they're ok after a while. Get that NS4! :p

Hi Spectorphiles! I need a bit of advice please?
I recently bought a well used Rex 4 - I already have a Legend 4 but, the Rex is now my main WMD! I totally love it.
I was restringing it today and noticed 2 of the machine heads were loose. When I looked more closely it turns out the anchor screws have bore out the wood into an oval hole - I now think it's been dropped and the tuners took one for the team!
I want to replace the machine heads and was wondering if I get another set of Gotoh's whether it would cause and problems if I swopped the left and rights over so the screws pointed up (as in towards the end of the headstock) so they're screwed into fresh wood?
I can't see any other way round this but, thought I'd run it past you guys first to see it you had any thoughts or further advice?
Also, could I get a number for the Spector Club?? ;)

Easier fix:
Get some toothpicks and figure out how much of the end of the toothpick you'll need to reach the bottom of the screw hole. Break the end off to length. Insert it into the hole, thick end first/pointy end up. Rescrew. You may have to put the toothpick to oneside of the hole or the other to orient your tuner correctly first, but your tuner should be solid again.

My guitarist and I both do repairs for others. We jokingly refer to these as "Precision Micro-Dowels". :D

Well after much deliberation (and some PM's to Patrick), and calls to JP @ Spector and Beaver @ BC, I decided to go with RXT #2 that will be featured as the NAMM piece. I love love that wenge NS4 LTD, but in all honesty I know I'm going to be more worried about it being dinged and messed up just like my MTD and I really want a 4-banger that I can take to shows and just actually play and not worry about that stuff. Plus it's the 2nd RXT ever made after Rex's prototype, will be the NAMM showpiece, and will be personally addressed to RSB himself by Mr. Brown so that's even more FTW.

Also I have been in love w/ that singlecut/Tele Spector design since I first saw it, and so it makes sense to go for that still now. It'll be in all the NAMM Spector booth pics and then will go to Patrick for a review and photographs and all that then sent to me at the end of January, around.

And hey Patrick- PJ told me to tell you he wants his NS230 already!! :p :D (not really, but I thought I'd let ya know he specifically mentioned he hasn't even seen it yet LOL).

Actually... I have enough respect for anyone who is cool with allowing me to shoot photos of their custom Spector that I absolutely WILL NOT play your bass.

That's for you to do first. I'll handle it to take photos. But as with PJ's bass and the basses Stuart sends to me, it's important to me to not get a single smudge or scratch on it.

No worries Chris. She'll still be untouched when you get her. I promise.

And it'll get treated with the utmost care. Thanks for agreeing to let me do those photos. It's important to us as a company to document these new instruments the best we can. I'll prioritize it and get it shot first for you. You won't be without it long.

And I'll be sure to get photos of Rex with it, just for you. :-)

Weather and other things considered. I joked with PJ yesterday that I wasn't holding it hostage. I swear! LOL. He's been a good sport about it. He also knows how I've treated it so it's all good.

Congrats on an awesome choice. I think you're going to love it. My attitude is that as long as Stuart's name is on the back of the headstock... what's not to love?
