Spector Club - Part 8

Hey guys. I've had my EURO5XL-EMG BTQ Preamp and Poplar Burl Top for about 4 months or so. I LOVE IT!

BUT, about 6 weeks in, I started getting signal loss at the jack sometimes. If I twisted the cable it would work again. Also I've started to notice a slight buzz. I tried it through my rig and my studio monitors to eliminate my rig as a possibility. Anyone have this happen?

Sounds like you need to have the input jack replaced. It's happend to me a couple of times with the barrel jacks over the years.

Yeah it's possible. I think it's a little more common when you're using straight plugs instead of right-angles - just the fact you have more sticking out. It could be the way you play that you're bumping it around a bit and not even noticing it. Or maybe you just got a lemon? But sounds like it's the jack.

Nino or anyone else more familiar with EMG preamps than I...

I put a new EMG BQC pre into my Euro LX4 - but compared to the other Spectors I have/have had, the output seems really low and muffled, plus there's a loud pop when I click on any effects pedals. Any suggestions? Everything appears to be wired up correctly but I could be mistaken.

I've been working with Rick from EMG to fix it but I have a show tonight and would like some resolution as quick as possible. Thanks guys!

Depending on what jack it is, if it's one of the gold plated ones (which Im under the impression most if not ALL are) then sometimes you get a little corrosion in there, not unlike what you'll see on the tuning pegs, bridge and other gold hardware.

When this happened to my Legends I just brought it to a tech who would very carefully use a dremel (sp?) tool and lightly scrape off the corrosion. The corroded bits are what cause the crackling, because the connection area isnt smooth and even. So some areas break the signal out, hence the crackling noise when you move the cable.

You can have a trusted tech try that, if not go for a new jack that isnt gold plated like the rest of the Spector hardware.

Ok ladies and gentle-ladies.

Im seriously starting to consider and plan out my next bass, an NS 5H2-FM.
Besides aesthetics, and neck stuff, my main concern is the pickups.

Im thinking about a MM pup at the bridge and a humbucker at the neck. Ideally I would like them both to be coil tap-able. I know the EMGs TWs are, BUT because of the volume drop, I really cant see myself getting them. Now, I know Bartolini has equivalent pickups in the same sized housings. However, I dont know much about them.

I would prefer passive pups, but still be tap-able. Is this possible with Bartolini? Which models would those be? Has anyone ever been able to A/B a Bart loaded Spector next to an EMG loaded one?

I know Ive asked about the sound before, but if anyone has any more details about Barts beyond what Ive gotten off their site that would be great..

Two questions:

What's the usual artist pricing for basses ordered from Spector (I'm seriously considering an Alex Webster sig WITH blood splatter :p).

And, are the brass zinc bridges (gold euro bridges) significantly heavier than the aluminium bridges (as in, would they help balance the weight issue with the Rebops?)

Not sure about ordering a bass from Spector but I'm interested to hear about this as well (a Silverburst WILL be mine in the next couple of months LOL).

As for the bridges - the brass/zinc ones are not significantly heavier but they are heavier. I don't know exact weights, but maybe a difference of a few ounces.

unless you get some ultralite tuners and the bridge.. i dont think itll do much.

a wider strap fixed the dive on my Rex5


i have no way of getting an exact weight but it is significantly heavier

Gracias sir. I'm in the process of a refinish on an old Czech made Spector. It would look much better with a chrome or black bridge. Easy enough to get one plated, I suppose. My bass is a NS4CRFM so I need to use the bridge that came on it, which is a solid brass type.The bass sounds great with the solid brass bridge. Would not want to change the sonic formula. I am thinking of black for the base of the bridge and chrome for the individual saddles.That might look cool.
