Help ! I want to modify my new (for me) Rebop 5 (alder one piece, emg-hz's,tone pump (no trim pot) to sound like a vintage jazz for my reggae project. I'm prepared to change pickups,preamp, bridge(this one has an aluminum one), whatever because I love how it feels. The pickups in my Lakland DJ4 sound so much better and it's passive. Should I go passive if I get the same pickups as my DJ(aero) ? I want a deeper tone than my DJ but this one is brighter and it has a rosewood fretboard where my DJ has a maple. Suggestions from those who've modified would be greatly appreciated !
Keep in mind those EMG-Hz's are already passive. Only the pre is active. Maybe eliminating the Tone Pump and wiring the whole thing passive would help.
Well...Fender is in California and Spector is in New York. Which pretty much describes how far apart their sounds are as well. The standard Spector is modern - punchy, clear, defined, and all "Spector". It's just that sound you hear when a bassist is using one on a particular song.
As far as 35" scale - not necessary at all. I've got one tuned BEAD and the other CGCF and I feel like I could go further without any slop. You'll find this to be this case pretty much across the board for this brand too.
Ive been playing my NS 2000/5 while watching the NHL All Star game this afternoon and Ive noticed that 1) The fretboard seems really dried out and starting to show some more serious signs of wear and 2) The frets are pretty ground down, almost flattened.
For the fretboard I have the Dunlop lemon oil stuff that I could lather on and give it a nice cleaner/moistening, but is there anything else I could/should do to it?
As far as the frets go, it doesnt really bother me, it doesnt affect my playing in any noticeable way, but how big of a process would it be to re-fret sometime in the future? How expensive?
Im not against re-doing the entire fretboard somewhere further down the line if I develop a real attachment to it, what would that run me?

Just keep putting the oil on it. But let it soak completely in. So put it on, wait a day or two, the put on more. Put it on lightly also.
Refrets are expensive and need to be done right. The best guy around here charges $350, but it's perfect. And he's not the most expensive, more in the middle.

I absolutely love the way my Rebop 5 sounds with the new brass nut, with longer tone sustaining and more growl but when I pick up my 85 NS-2A...I fall in LOVE all over again with that warm, smooth, full, growl! Sigh! Absolutely in love with the PJ pups! Can't wait to hear it in a fretless some day soon.

Alright, sounds good. The fretboard definitely needs a cleaning before I start soaking it with lemon oil. I can see the grease and grime in the cracks of the rosewood. Im hoping that it's not in a "downhill" stage towards cracking and disrepair..
The bass was definitely played by the previous owner, but I dont know how well he/she took care of it. I still gotta replace that truss rod cover, but the shipping and borders fees (thanks to UPS) are expensive...

Something that I'm really interested in... I've actually never had an NS-2 BEM and NS-2 with Pau Ferro side-by-side. So I'd be very curious as to how you think the fingerboards affect the overall tone.

Patrick may be able to answer this better, but it could have been b/c of a more limited production run during the SSD era? I too have very rarely seen any SSD NS-4's for sale here, much less in specific colors.
I almost got the honey-natural SSD NS-4 that was F/S a few mo's ago but it was pulled which I can't fault the guy for.
I always keep my eyes peeled for them also but they're just a tough find. Maybe b/c it was in a "transition" period they're more collectible, who can say for sure.My NS-5XL is from the SSD era but can't say it's better/worse than the current or older US stuff. It's all amazing.
I'm not locked on the SSD era spectors,and I nearly got myself a real nice 2000 ns4 few monthes ago,but beacause i'm from Israel i missed it by day and a half.I was so upset couldn't look at my self for few days for missing that great opportunity:
