Spector Club - Part 9

IME, it goes down like this-

the 18V circuit isn't necessarily "hotter" than the 9V. What it means to me is, I can boost the Tone knobs higher (T and B) without it clipping. You seriously can just about dime both of those controls and you won't hear it getting distortion going into your amp. It's more about headroom than anything else.
My '85 NS-2 was growly and more aggressive sounding, but I couldn't really do the same w/ the onboard EQ as I can with my NS-5. So it just depends.
I think the 18V circuit gets you more tone out of the actual bass, whereas with the 9V circuit, there's definitely more "color" being added- which isn't better or worse- just different. That's why I have both! ;)
My NS-5 has less of a natural growl and so for some things it's better. I love both equally and am glad I get to choose between the two.
My RXT has the 9V and it's hard to make that bass not growl LOL with the DC35's in it!

What model is he playing? I agree that it looks like an 18V preamp based on the 3 knob configuration which makes sense if it's an NS4 (two EMG 35XX pickups). However, it looks like it has a Euro bridge (rounded corners). :confused:

Edit: In one of his other videos you can see that it is an SSD era. The bridge design may have been a little different back then on the US models.

Yeah i think i may throw down on the 18 volt for my 2000/4 that i am revamping. I have a tonepump in my Euro and want something a bit different for my 2000/4. I also have 35DCs that i am throwing in it too! :D

The refinishing part is going to have to first before anything though. Now to choose a color.....:hmm:

I think that would sound killer, for sure! Considering the TP is designed to have more of that inherent "growl" of the USA 9V Circuit, the 18V option would be a very good choice just to have those differing options. :)
Like I said, I couldn't pick between the two. They both are excellent and match their basses very well.

I was actually considering this as well. I know they run about $60 online, but i have yet to find someone that has put one in their bass and can give soundclips. I may get one just to try so i can put my curiosity to rest. :D

Fact is, Robbie seems to be very accessible for being the mega-star he and his band are, which is awesome. Of all the Spector artists, besides Rex, he's the guy who most fits with what I do musically and I'm sure this extends to many more people than me. If Inez was a Spector only dude that would be awesome as his pick technique (along with Starr's) had a huge influence on me and many others.

Again, PJ and the AR people aren't stupid. Robbie is a good pick. What you see here is success butthurt that pervades most forums, which is sad, coming from most self-proclaimed "adults". I saw the lessons on Facebook and was already psyched before JPS posted it here.

..... One can dislike someone or something - I have no problem with that. But calling someone a no talent hack not worth learning something from is just wrong....:eyebrow:

Unless they are fingersyncing (I coined a new phrase) to someone else's bass trak... millie vanillie style.. :D

FWIW, The EMG BTS (9-18vdc) Pre amp owners manual (for the pre in my NS-2J) recommends adding a 2nd 9vdc in series "to give you more headroom". I plan on doing that after I finish the restoration on mine. We'll see.... :D

Not sure where the Robbie bashing came from... but I got a chance to talk to him at NAMM and the man knows what hes doing and is an awesome bassist.. To the point I brought up why it was only in the recent album that he gets to "stand out" more then normal. He lays down multiple tracks and the producer picks which sounds "best" for the song and mix.

Its mainstream music... If your album is being produced by someone.. the intent would be to have a mass appeal and be more about selling the "song" rather then the individual talents.. sad as that sounds.. its a business first and foremost. Sell out or not.. I would much rather be playing on stage doing Godsmack songs over having an office day job so I can play weekends.

IMO "rockstar" would be one of the best temp jobs ever.

So i know a guy who used to do finishes for Fender but no longer does. He refinished my father-in-law's strat and I'm thinking of getting my NS-2000/4 refinished a new color by him. Suggestions...?

I was thinking either a green color like Spector offers or like a dark walnut finish. I know those are totally different, but I mostly have black basses only haha! Just looking for something different.
