Spector Club Pt. 3 (Insert Clever Title Here)

Actually it's not a Hazlab copy, it is a Hazlab preamp. The color of the board is different but it sounds like the old ones use to. This is the Hazlab preamp that is coming in all the USA NS-2 now. I own 4 of them and they sound incredible. Actually I think they sound better than the old ones did.

I know they are expensive but if you have a Euro with the EMG, Aguilar or tone pump it is well worth the money to upgrade. You won't be disappointed. ;)

Wraith: Go here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] Not sure when the change was made but all Euro series (Not Rebop, or P/J) now come with the CS-TW and all USA bolt on's come standard with them as well.
Eagle Moon- I can't really tell you about the CS-TW pups. My Euro 4-35 had the P/J setup and my NS-5H2 has dual MM-TW pups. My playing time is very limited on basses with CS-TW's. There are others on here that can give you a better response as far as how they sound. Good luck!

Thank you Jas that's interesting. I wonder what the reasoning is behind putting what are presumably more expensive pups in the Euro than the NS?

My Euro is I'm pretty sure DCs. It has Vol/Blend/Treble/Bass with cut and boost too and I suspect the TW pull switches are on volume controls.

Maybe the TW's address some of the criticism that says the Tonepump is too aggressive?

I realise that this is the pre that my incoming Euro has in it, not the 18v version with the concentric boost and treble. My NS5 had the 18V version, can anyone comment on the tonal difference between the two. At $500 full price the 9v one should be spectacular.

I'd like to think that I had a hand in bringing back the Hazlab as much as I whined to PJ about the Tonepump! :D

Incidently, Mighty Mite sells what looks like a Hazlab copy on their site for a pretty fair price, IIRC. I'd love to find out how it sounds.

It was always my understanding that the "Hazlab" pre was never gone. The Tone Pump pre is still standard in all the Euro series basses (although there are other choices for a factory upgrade). The Tone Pump has always been a "like it or hate it" pre, for sure!
Wraith- My NS-5 has MM-TW pickups with the Aguilar OBP-3 pre. The control layout is stacked bass/treble, pull up selectable mids, and 2 volume controls that pull up to select single or dual coil mode.

More of us should whine. Whatever posessed them to do, not one, but two "boost only" pre's (OPB-1 followed by the Tonepump) is beyond me. :eyebrow:

I have the OPB-1 in my NS2CR and I'm really getting unhappy with it. It's fine for normal, flat operation. But there are too many times I want to tame that bite without messing with the amp or compromising by boosting lows unneccessarily. :(

I understand what you're saying. My U.S. bolt-on had the Aggie OBP-1. I opted for the EMG BQS pre. Feels like I have much more control not to mention the improved tonal palette.

I get a feeling that John East's U-Retro series isn't always 'flavour of the month' on TB compared to Aguilar, Bartolini, EMG etc. I've fitted and had already installed models of all these pre amps as well as having a whole lot of experience with the John East produced ACG filter based pre's.

In fact if I spent as much time practicing as I do fiddling I could be quite a good player :rollno:

John, as well as being an exceedingly nice guy, is very clever and he designs his circuits with a great amount of consideration i.e. they aren't just simple boost and cut pre's. He even uses active blend circuitry to overcome the limitations of passive blend.

I've no connection with the guy commercially but I'll always big up his work, including the ACG pre's based on experience.

I've heard comments that when the treble is boosted they can be noisy. All I can say is that at max treble on my NS5 there is total and complete silence :eyebrow:

I just love the ability to boost the mids at a little above the lowest frequency setting and leave the bass and treble flat, clear, growly aggressive in yer face bass that cuts through like a hot knife through butter :)

And the ultimate knob 'bling', gold on black (the 2 switches are tucked away in the cavity defaulted to active and active blend)

I will give the HazLabs 9v cut and boost on the new bass a really good chance to prove itself but don't be surprised if another U-Retro gets fitted :rollno:

I honestly couldn't say as I never ran the Aggie rolled all the way off. I would run the Aggie bass about 3/4 full and the treble about 1/2 way to get a 'warm' tone. I'm still getting used to the midrange on the new pre as I've never had an EMG setup with midrange. Interestingly enough, the midrange control isn't that aggressive, but rather subtle unless of course you pin the gain and even then it's not bad. Definitely not a Bartolini midrange curve.

i pulled the hazlab out of my ns4cr and went with a vvtt control arrangement and have been very happy(still have the emg p-js).
i never used the tone controls on the hazlab so i pulled it out and found i could get lots of tonal variation from the passive controls.

that being said, i gonna put the haz pre back in soon to see how it sounds to me now as it has been 9 years since i pulled it.
