Spector Club Pt. 4 (Insert Clever Title Here)

Well figure I started playing when I was 13 - I don't think I owned my first decent bass (Carvin) until 6 years later. By then I was a strictly 5 or 6 string player and I don't know what Spector's where available then other than 4 string. I remember when the SSD stuff was out there in the 90's but no way I had the cash. I eventually wound up doing the EBMM thing and still love them but it was simply time now.

Eventually I'd like to get a Euro 6 as well but I think I'll let this one settle.

When you say you want an "NS-4", are you meaning a SSD with PJ's (Stuart notes in an interview this was kind of a screw up in designation during the SSD period) or a Spector NS-4 with the dual soap bars?

Judging by your subsequent post maybe the former. What makes you want one over a Spector NS-2? Just curious.

OK, just curious. Since you seemed to want an NS-4 instead of the more common "NS-2" I was wondering since the SSD is a PJ just like any NS-2.

Just my opinion, but it seems that an NS-4 would make more sense/be more "practical" as you could always install EMG P/Js inside the 35-sized shells, but swap them out for 35Js, DCs, or CS soapbars if you decide to. Whereas an NS-2, while giving you the "Classic Spector/Active EMG P/J Grind", can *only* give you that unless you're up for some major surgery.

...but that's me - I like options.

Guys need your help.
I noticed today on my Zebop's neck that there are dark areas where i place my thumb. How can this be? I tried cleaning that and failed. Can it be from the sweat? Isn't it supposed to have a satin finish that protects the wood?
Can it just be the way the wood is and i have only noticed it now?

Unfortunately, no. Since Spectors are an acquired taste, they are usually sold to those who know and love the tone. If there is a high end Spector at a retailer where they sell the run-of-the-mill basses and it's been there a while, you can bet you'll probably get a decent deal on it.

Or if you find somebody that bought one, doesn't appreciate the tone, doesn't know what they really have and sells it on bay for $300.00.
Would love to find a 5r that way...

It's gone. It was a beautiful either Euro or EuroLX 4string in natural quilt, with case, for only $700!

I would have grabbed it myself, but it's so close to my Euro4 I have already...............damn! Should have done it anyway.

OK gang,

I'm probably going to order my EMG 45's tomorrow. Was going to get the DC's, but after going through EMG's site I'm wondering if a 45P (neck) and 45J (bridge) to make it (Legend 6) sound more consistant to my NS2 would be better choices.

Opinions? Educated guesses?

Do it! I had the 40P and 40J in a ReBop...that combo sounds great and is closest youre gonna get to the classic Spector P/J tone in a 6 stringer.

I'll have to see if I can get the same price on the P & J. The guy at Sam Ash quoted me $84.99 each on the DC's (which is about $20-$25 less per than almost anybody else).

I can't say for sure that it's not a little wear 'n tear on your neck from playing (as you said, the pic isn't the best), but taking a quick look all 4 of my ReBops & ZeBops have quite visible different grain patterns from the 3 pieces of Maple used in the necks, and which can easily look like "dirt" depending on the grain.

If it's not, I can't imagine it would be that hard to clean up the neck and reapply the "light satin" finish that Spector uses, nor would it be that expensive to havea tech do it if you don't want to mess with finishing agents.

@Ian yes, that's what i'm thinking about. It's weird cos when i look at the shades from a straight angle (just above the neck) and not sideways like in the pic they are almost invisible. I'll plly take it to a tech.
