Spector NS Dimension

I must disagree with anybody not digging those Fishmans. Granted I've only watched videos but damn, they're just so articulate, balanced, and angry all at once. I do not understand what problem people would have with them and I'm happy to see Spector was willing to get away from EMG on this model. No hate on EMG but brah, it's 2021. There's a lot of pup options out there and a multi scale bass pushing the boundaries should have pickups that push the boundaries.

Same with the euros. People forget the classic spector basses were solid maple. The euros are great but the alder and top wood sandwich is really dark sounding no matter what pickups you use. Same with chambering the basses. Doesn't help.

I have 3 Euros and a Forte:

- Spalted Maple top w/Alder back, Aguilar HC pickups/Aguilar OBP-2
- Quilted Maple top w/Alder back, Bartolini custom pickups/Tonepump
- Solid Walnut, Dimarzio P pickup/Tonepump
- Solid Ash, EMGX DC35 pickups/OBP-2

They are all plenty bright sounding. The Tonepump can especially add quite a bit of brightness as well. Sure, the HAZ pre + all maple definitely has a ton of top end on tap (it's a given with all that maple), but I wouldn't call the basses with other woods dark.

Also, I read (or saw, can't remember) an interview with Stuart Spector at some point talking about how they experimented with different combos and found the Alder + Walnut stripe + Maple top on the Euro gave the closest sound to the all-maple they were doing up to that point (and with much less weight).

The fact that the angle of the pickups is not parallel with the angle of the last fret makes it look weird to me. Plus the 5-piece neck screams Ibanez as well

Dingwall’s have similar (identical?) angle between the pups and last frets. I suspect there is a point that you cannot cant the pickup(s) further as the poles will no longer properly align to the strings. Ideally they would order, or build, custom pups with the poles canted to match the fret angle and then they would mate up nicely. I assume this as speculation though as I have not seen inside either the Dingwall or Fishmans when in a fanned setup as such.

Well I pulled the trigger on a 5 string green burl :hyper:
Awesome! You'll love it. Here's my 4.

Very curious to hear more real world experiences with these beasts, especially comparing against dingwall.

As am I. My dad has a 4 string in haunted moss on order, so I’ll get some hands on time soon. I played the 5 and was not a fan. Just something about the feel and ergonomics was off to me. Didn’t even have to plug in. First position reach was long and the nut became an issue. I ended up taking home a nice Ibanez.

My concern with Dingwall comparisons is that Dingwall kinda seems like a clique to me. The cost of entry is high, never hear a bad word about them, used prices are high, almost all tone examples are the same. I’m not saying they aren’t capable of anything else, they are clearly the pinnacle of multi scale Basses. I AM saying that someone who has bought into the brand might have a bit of bias built in to their opinion which is hard to dispel. The only reason I mention this is that I aware now of being guilty of it in the past.

My Dingwall NG2 is in the classifieds :)

So I assume you got the dimension and you saw no reason to keep your NG2 at that point?

Yes, exactly what I’ve been thinking. My hope is that the barriers to entry for a quality 34-37” multiscale don’t have to be paying $2500 for a bolt on Chinese made bass with very basic woods and kinda pigeonholed stylings. No offense at all to dingwall owners and I’m not trying to judge design decisions. Just saying that more multiscale options for all bass players is a good thing.

Got my dimension 5 today, been playing away the past hour. These fishmans are really versatile, really cool they can get a single coil tone.
Fav setting right now pickups balanced in voice1(toggle switch up)
Nice! I like the markings. They're a little more interesting than many I've seen. Congrats!
Do you notice any issues with the output of the B string?
