spend more than 1500 on the first instrument

If you spend quite a bit on your first instrument and you are happy for a long duration, you have made a good decision. If you spend the same amount and you are disappointed or not happy the long duration, ***you will learn a lot about yourself and your musical purchases***. Either way, you come out ahead.

Only if I knew I'd make that $1500 back. Every bass I have owned over my almost 12-year "career" has paid itself back, and then some. I already have enough debt from existing, I don't need more debt to do what I love.

I am currently in the situation, where I started playing guitar 3 weeks ago, and I love it as much as I did playing bass in the beginning. I have now played the bass for over 8 years (of my 22 year old life) and plan to do that with guitar as well.
I was at several music stores and fell in love with a guitar for 1750 bucks, but I am unsure if it is worth it for me being a bad guitarist.

Sure- if you don't you will pay the 50% penalty when you re-sell but that is the risk you take.

If an instrument psychically demands you buy it, you should buy it. It may end up being "the one" like my modulus q5, or my humble American Standard strat. If many instruments psychically demand you buy them, either seek legitimate professional help or hang out on music forums full of other gear addicted bad influences.

Hey, to each his own, but, that is a little steep when you say your are bad? I like shooting but I can't justify paying $1200 for a browning O/U. Even though it would be a life long firearm I would pass to my son.
I think I would pay $400-500 for a nice Fender Strat or Tele 1st. After a few years of improving, consider the $1750 guitar. Like some have said, $1500 is nothing for a guitar for some, others its just a dream.
BUT,,,if you are single, soon to be engaged, BUY IT NOW. Once you are married, you can't do it,,,,

I think when you spend $1500+ on an instrument it should be a bucket list type instrument. For example my Warwick thumb NT6 is my bucket list instrument. But nah I played import (Mexican fender) and copy(peavey fury) p basses all through my teens and don't regret it at all. Been playing with the same guitar player for 20 years and electric Guitar wise my band is basically all ESP these days. Singer mainly uses an ESP thinline acoustic and will use an alverez to avoid having to retune the acoustic at shows because the crowd noise makes the built in tuners go crazy. Lead guitarist mainly plays 1000 series ltd eclipses and Stephen carpenter (deftones) signature series. I highly recommend those ec1000 guitars. They are essentially a les Paul but with years and ears of player input put into them. Body shape while similar is a little smaller, they are 24 fret and the smaller body allows for easier playing in thenhigh register. And they aren't expensive at all. Our guitarists bought both of his ec1000 guitars for $400 each and the only thing he's done to them is the popular EMG 18v mod. Where he spends big money is on nice tube amps

The Korean manufacturers make some blindingly good instruments for the money, and some Indonesian ones are very good too.
