Double Bass SPIROCORES ARE SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!

I don't exactly know how to explain this chiropractic maneuver except it's a sharp calculated blow to the bridge to help move the bridge. You must first be able to recognize if your bridge is perpendicular or a tiny bit off. Maybe take that book Chris mentioned and use it as a square on the floor side of your bridge to see if the bridge is leaning towards the ceiling.

After much experimenting, I’m back in the Spirocore fold (almost):
Mittel E
Weich AD
The G is the hold out - currently Innovation Polychrome and it works fine with Spiros, but I’m going to try a Perpetual G. (The Poly G is a very string tho —punchy warm pizz and very nice under the bow.)

Actually, I ordered DG Perps with the intention of matching them with the 2 Spiros, but the Sweich D is sounding fantastic both pizz and (surprise/no surprise) arco.

I’ll pass this along — I had read a thread on the BG side started by a guy who claimed he found a way to kill the twang and brightness of his brand new flat wound BG strings by rubbing a particular skin cream on them (forget which one), leaving it on for varying lengths of time before rubbing it off.

I’ve had this full set of Sweichs for about 5-6 years now but never used the DG — never liked them because of the rasp and twang. So I tried this - put a skin moisturizer cream I found in the house on the D for a few hours or so before rubbing off. And what it did was take practically all the new string twang and the rasp out of it (the stuff that makes you yank a string right off). And so now after a playing the heck out of the bass or a week now (and loving every second of it), what I’ve got now is just beautiful: chocolatey but extremely clear, brilliant (but not harsh at all) tone — and powerful, of course.

Very happy. Spiro Power!
Dang I gotta try the moisturizer trick ..... !!!!

Welp, i now have full spiro sets on both basses. Mitts on Hybrid and Weichs on Ply. Guts were fun, but the lack of focus and sustain were leaving me feeling the sound was a little flat. Synthetics are great too, but die out eventually and don't always cut through a band. Spiros last forever, cut through with ease, articulate the note fundamental extremely well, and punch hard in a mid frequency range that no other string seems to be able to. I think my string mania is finally winding down, and here on out it is not a question of which string, but which set of Spiros will work best on the bass. Weich or Mitts? I think Mitts are my all around favorite string ever, but the Weichs allow for slightly faster playing when that is needed.

Seanto, I have Spiro Mitts on all wood flatback (originally on the plywood Upton) and EP Slaps on the Upton. I'll run those this gig season, but will likely get a set of Spiros for my Upton Super Swing, again! I get what you're saying. I feel that the Mitts are super quick on my flatback and attribute that to my luthier's excellent setup!

Yep, Mitts can definitely be a fast string when you have a great setup. I had them on my ply at one point and they were fantastic of course. In fact i might even put them on the ply down the road but simply don't own two sets of Mitts!

This is eerily similar to my current position ....

Yes, they are different lengths and I have the labelled and in different bags.

You have an unhealthy obsession with trying every string...but I'm the OG unhealthy string obsessor.
There’s some kinda fancy quote about being obsessed that makes it sound like it’s actually good for something ... but i forget it now ;)

I mean sonically. Or feel. It’s the “mid step” yeah? Between weich and mittel ....
