Sprained finger? No problem!

I sprained the middle finger of my right hand and had to play a rehearsal and gig doing jazz charts with a 4-horn combo wearing a splint on it. I've been studying classical guitar, though, and played with my index and ring fingers the whole time keeping the splint up and out of the way. This worked surprisingly well! I may try p-a-m-i on bass when the finger heals!

I broke a bone in my right (plucking) hand in October 2021, and had a hard cast halfway up my arm. Only my index finger and thumb were poking out, and I couldn't bring them together. (Fortunately, I don't usually use a pick.) I played several restaurant and bar gigs that way. At one, I had someone come up at the end and tell me in a hushed voice, "I just want to let you know what an inspiration you are..." :crying: :smug:

If it was the left hand you could have discovered slide bass. A modern technique to simulate fretless on a bass with speed bumps!

I actually slammed the tip of my right hand middle finger in a car door as I was unloading for an upright gig at the Hotel Gansevoort in Manhattan. Blood was everywhere, and the nail was cracked and hanging loose. The hotel had only bandaids for first aid!

The BL actually called in 3 other bassists to fill-in at the last second… the knowledge and sight of those bassists in the audience watching and waiting to jump in for me at the gig inspired me play on despite the pain. The gig went great, but had to have the wound debrided and cauterized by a surgeon the next morning. :bassist::laugh:
