Would you tell me the names of a few tunes by them, I downloaded a couple and didnt care for what I heard so I deleted them. Maybe if you recomened a few personal favorites Id enjoy them as well.. I just need a lil guidance as to what songs to check out, if I like what I hear, I'll then go buy the cd like I did with the Donny Hathaway Live and Road Scholars one already.

Would you tell me the names of a few tunes by them, I downloaded a couple and didnt care for what I heard so I deleted them. Maybe if you recomened a few personal favorites Id enjoy them as well.. As far as The Carribean Jazz Project-
I don't have any of their albums, per se; what I have are a couple of Heineken Puerto Rico Jazz Festival cds...CJP perform a couple of cuts. Their stuff is 'nice'(if you get my drift); I just never bought any outright 'cause I still have all those Spyro & Samuels' discs at my disposal.

also, Roberto Vally, who was mentioned earlier, is just an awesome player. I got to hear him back in his south Florida days when he played in a bar band called Leisuremania... unreal! I was there when he got the audition inviation for Spyro Gyra. time, tone, and taste like nobody's business!

Agreed! But I have to say, out of this bunch, Scott Ambush is in a league all by himself! I've been to quite a few Spyro Gyra concerts and of the many bass solos I've seen over the years by many different bassists for many different bands, none have come close to what I've seen Scott do live! I take that back! Marcus Miller is another who does stuff as unbelievable as say a Victor Wooten!bimplizkit said:

This was maybe pre-City Kids; IIRC, he played a sunburst StingRay.
IMO, Cartaya was probaly best suited for SG; his Latin roots were stronger than the others on the list.
Hmmmm....IMO, I think Scott conveys a Latin/African/Caribbean feel quite well and plays it authentically. Oscar may have the Latin roots edge but Scott has way more versitality. I can't hear Oscar playing that authentic Zydeco groove on Breakfast at Igor's or that deep down funk groove of The Deep End, Extrovertical or Wind Warriors. Oscar is a terrific songwriter and the tunes Spyro Gyra did record are monster latin masterpieces. He's also an excellent slapper and has great stage presence! Both very fine bassists but if I had to pick one over the other, it would be Scott Ambush hands down.JimK said:
I agree with DWBass about Scott!!! The last few times I went to see Spyro Gyra, it was always for the monster solo I knew Scott would do in the middle of the show. They need to release a live album with Scott's solo on it, and how the band sounds live now..........way different than the C.D.'s!

Guys, I have an mp3 of the song "Nothing To Lose" played live at the North Sea Jazz Festival that has a 7 minute 2 part monster solo (finger style then slap style). This was recorded when Scott was new in the band. Probably 1991-1992. Go Invalid Link Removed and look for the Spyro Gyra folder. The mp3 is in there.
Road Scholars also has a solo by Scott on the song "Shaker Song" which was done jazz trio style with only Scott, Tom Schuman and Joel Rosenblatt.

When I saw them years back with Oscar Cataya,and Kim Stone personaly I thought there groove was allright but yet it was something missing.Then along came Scott Ambush who just locked it in so damn tight ! and I said then I think this is the bass player they need to try to keep.

Apparently they too saw that they had a major coup on their hands! Too bad, drummer, Joel Rosenblatt couldn't stay around. Yes he did play on that cd. The song is Shaker Song. Jay and Julio stepped off stage and Scott Ambush, Joel Roseblatt and Tom Schuman did a jazz trio version of that song! It's a great recording!cassanova said:
