Squier Affinity Jaguar Bass...H?!

jDUEEiO.png

Mods done! Just finished. G&L MFD, stock wiring harness, Albridge MM bridge, 3-way series/single/parallel switch, and hipshot licensed ultralites. Had to do the painters tape trick for the tuners, but install was really quick and easy. Used the G&L diagram for the switch, worked great. Series mode is SPICY, on the verge of overloading my amp. Parallel and single coil sound great. Video coming soon with the entire mod process and some sound clips!

Awesome! Is that Albridge heavy like a hi-mass? That looks huge!

Stock bridge is 97g, Albridge is 120g.

Stock tuners are 82g each, Hipshot lic ultralites are 53g. Total weight savings on the headstock are 116g or .25 lbs.
I’m eager to see how the Hipshot Lic tuners were installed. I’m leaving my tuners alone, but if I do wanna swap them out I’ll take it to an actual tech because I can’t drill to save my life.

Agreed it’s hard to beat a classy Black and Tan. Unbelieveably well-built and great to play bass. Medium scale is just a pleasure, along with the small body size and the electronics are simple. $249 is steal. The pickup is kinda dark due it being series, if you were going to change one thing this might be one place to upgrade someday. The one I bought on Amazon was for cheap and did help that, and is no noisier. We’re going to lead you down the mod path if you hang out here for too long!

‘Haha”, yes, I have thought about mods to the new Jaguar, some lightweight tuners and a new bridge and perhaps some shielding if needed.
I’ll be using the bass at rehearsal this Monday evening with one of my bands so I’ll get to give the bass a full check out, at loud rock band volume.
My current mod is being done on my SBMM short scale stingray bass, it’s at my local guitar paint shop being painted from the Daphene blue to a satin black color.
The short scale stingray in satin black with the maple neck should look totally bad-ass when finished, it will be done in about 2 more weeks.
Cheers, Davyo

That replacement bridge shape look pretty match with jaguar bass shape !!

I’m in contact with Jerry and Christine Sentell, I was asking if they offer their MM humbuckers in white covers. Negative. But it looks like a good replacement. 10.5 kohm winding, 4-conductor, 9mm alnico rods.

I’m also speaking with Howard Ulyate and Martin Herrick, trying to weigh my options.
I've bought from Sentell before and they make a good pickup at great prices. The Herrick looks very interesting and sounds great in videos. Although a bit pricey, almost the price of the Affinity when you add the cost of shipping and my efforts at contacting them have gone unanswered.I took a look at so many brands and it is mind boggling with all the choices available. So after much consideration I pulled the trigger on the Sentell.

I’m going with Ulyate, but there’s nothing special about my order. Just a regular MM humbucker with the 9.5mm alnico pole pieces. The Sentell workshop is about 20 mins away from where I live though… maybe next time I’ll get a set from them.

It seems like everyone is looking at this bass as a mod project.
While I own way to many bass’s I decided to get one of these just for fun,,, and the fact that they only cost $250.
I was favoring the gray color, got it delivered and exchanged it for the black color with the maple neck.
The black version looks totally awesome in my opinion after seeing and comparing the gray and black versions in person.
At first I wasn’t sure if I liked the sound or feel of this Jaguar but after playing with it for the last week I’ve really come to enjoy this new addition to my large family of bass’s.
I actually think I’m just going to leave it stock and not do any mods on it, it’s actually a great little bass as is, in my opinion.
Definitely a great bass for band rehearsal’s and I have no second thoughts about using it on paying gigs as well.
Anyhow, just my 2cents.
Cheers, Davyo

Ok, time retract my praise of my new Jaguar.
Everything I said in my personal review I stand by except my praise for this bass ended when I put a strap on and played the bass while standing up, which I hadn’t done yet.
Wow, this bass is seriously neck heavy, as in beyond belief neck heavy, even worse than any Gibson bass (lol)
I’m sure these Jaguar bass’s vary in weight from bass to bass but the neck dive I experienced when standing and playing was completely unacceptable !!!
Yeah, I know, put some lightweight tuners on it and a mass bridge but with this particular bass I was holding I really don’t think that would have helped much.
If ya only plan on sitting down while playing this bass then great.
Anyhow, after discovering the massive neck dive I boxed the bass up and shipped it back for a refund,, I’m definitely bummed as I really liked the bass otherwise.
Cheers, Davyo
