Squier Affinity Jaguar Bass...H?!

Got one in grey earlier this week and a black hipshot bridge today… unfortunately, this bridge is huge and one corner protrudes out over the bottom edge of the bass. Anyone know of a smaller, dark colored bridge that’s a direct 5 screw replacement?

I guess its a little late, but I really love this bridge, it is a drop in, and yes you can get it in black brass or black aluminum. B Style Fender® Mount Bridges

I love these quick load bridges. Perfect for modders and frequent string changers.
Yeah, I love em' for the easy string change/neck change! FYI, you gotta get the five hole "FM1" model for drop-in.

So a quick update before we take the stage: this Wilkinson pickup, internally, is not grounded correctly I’ve concluded. It’s completing a ground loop and causing my mic to shock me. My other basses do not do this. This guitar is fully shielded and perfectly grounded, but it is buzzing like crazy and giving me fits. I’ll have to replace this Wilkinson with the original and figure out where to go from here.

View attachment 4354240 If the VM Jaguar humbucker model is getting scarce, I’m glad I jumped on this a while back.
Wow, the sole pickup is so low! A lot of knobs for one pickup too! So much possibly for adding a neck pickup. I've never seen that pickup before either, so I guess it's a soapbar-scale MM style humbucker? Never mind, I could just go search for more info instead of derailing, LOL

Could you please tell us more about this model? It is a Vintage Modified? What year? I'm having trouble finding info on the Jags with the H pickup in this bridge position.

They are Vintage Modified, yeah. There's a bit more info here:

34" scale length, active with a 3 band EQ, Jazz nut width, satin neck finish. I played them a few times in shops, and they seemed really good for their price (although I wasn't a massive fan of the preamp, standard for Squiers though IME).

I always wanted to get one, convert it to passive, and get a PJ VM Jag pickguard & install a Precision pickup. That would have been a great project I think, just didn't get around to it.

@Hank Scorpio posted the specs on this model above. Per the serial number, it was made in 2012 in the Cor-Tek plant in Indonesia.

I see from your signature that you have a Sterling Ray 4. I hope you enjoy playing yours, but I’ve never found a Ray that felt comfortable for me, even though the sound is different and I wanted to get that sound somehow. When I was looking for a Jaguar bass in late 2019, I found this one on the Sam Ash used site. $149.00 USD, with a Crossrock gig bag! It was offered cheap because the active bass (preamp-dependent) had intermittent cutouts. Cosmetically, it was perfect. Sam Ash has been great to me on packing and shipment, and this was no exception.

Ten minutes spent re-flowing the battery box’s and output jack’s electrical connections later, it worked perfectly, and has remained so.

I’m very comfortable with the Jag’s ergonomics, so I finally found a bass with a StingRay sound that suits me. While my Church was in lockdown, my jam buddy and I recorded a cover of Collective Soul’s “Shine” for one of the Church’s virtual services. It nailed that sound.

“Burpy the Bass” (sung to the tune of Georgie Fame’s “Bonnie and Clyde”) is a great addition to my sonic arsenal. :)

This is an interesting looking bass and seems to be pretty rare with this bridge HB pickup. My Ray4 is a new acquisition for me, and I'm having fun modding it and trying to figure out if it is a long-term bass for me or not. The ergonomics of this Jaguar do look like a better fit than the Ray!

@Fitz do you have the Wilkinson MWM4 pickup? According to its specs it is wound to 12.5 kohm, in series I assume. Is it plenty loud wired passive?

Having a hard time choosing a pickup that will be loud enough in passive. The Duncan is only about 8.3 kohm in series, not sure if that’s good enough without a pre. But then again there’s the FGN Mighty Jazz that has a passive Seymour Duncan SMB-4A in the bridge position…

It’s plenty loud, I gigged it two nights ago.

However—mine has a grounding issue that was causing an insane amount of hum, so I ordered the $13 generic Music Man pickup from Amazon. It just arrived today and sounds just as good, is 100% identical in terms of construction (two ceramic bar magnets floating in a layer of hard black goop), and is completely quiet. I highly recommend saving some money and getting the Amazon pickup instead. The Wilkinson is probably made in the same overseas factory with the same materials except it costs about 3x as much after tax.
