Squier Affinity Jaguar Bass...H?!

A question for those who have moded your Jags (especially, for those who have changed the pickup). I added an Alnico MM4.4 to mine (Nordstrand) and am noticing that I'm getting a chorus/warbling effect in the upper register. I can't tell if it is because the bass is fretting out a bit (which it may very well be...slightly) or if the pull of the magnets (working on some fairly light gauge strings) is pulling on the strings, causing an audible effect. I never played the bass before the mod (had it sent straight to a tech to have the mod work done), so unfortunately, I wasn't able to "A"-"B" the comparison. Thoughts?

Can’t say I get the with any of mine, when we say light gauge what are we talking? Is the effect there even when playing lightly?

I’ll have a look at practice on Tuesday they look pretty close, the bridge move might put the Pickup a bit close to the bridge tho
I have a J Bass with lipstick tube pups that I got the chorus effect from.I took it to my luthier for a preamp install and asked him to check on pup to which he replied that it was probably too close to the strings. He must have adjusted the pup height because it was fine afterwards.

Swingbass 40-90, I believe. I'm not getting that effect in the lower register...just above the 12th fret and it is there a bit when playing lightly, but is more pronounced with normal playing.
standard tuning? im guessing you might just be pushing things a little out of tune. mine all live in drop D with EB 105-50 Reg Slinky, so might be worth uping the string size due to the shorter scale?

Yep - standard tuning. I'm usually a 45-105 guy on all other bases. I think I ended up with this set on accident at some point over the years and just slapped them on there. Just curious if it was a common issue, but it sounds like it isn't.

Holy balls! If you stack the order by phone deal it’s under $200. Says only 3 left at the time of this post though, and only gray color available
There were 4 this morning ... until I called them. I paid $207.04 after taxes for one of the greys.

Looks like they have 3 black ones and an undetermined number of blue ones. The other colors are custom Sweetwater only colors and are higher priced.

Squier Affinity Series Jaguar Bass H - Black with Maple Fingerboard

Squier Affinity Series Jaguar Bass H - Lake Placid Blue with Maple Fingerboard

Squier Affinity Series Jaguar Charcoal Frost Metallic with Indian Laurel Fingerboard

That's sick.I bought mine when they first came out and it was hard getting the one you wanted.I wanted the blue with maple but settled for the charcoal. That is a great price.I own a slew of basses including high enders and I love this bass.I made some upgrades to the pup and guts and it sounds incredible. Not that stock sucked.Plays real comfy also.

My charcoal grey metallic arrived this afternoon from Sweatwater. So far I'm digging everything but the sound. Amp is a Fender Rumble 40. This puppy is going to take some EQ experimentation to get something I like out of it. So far it seems better suited for songs by The Cure. I like The Cure so this should work out nicely after some tweakage.

I'm normally a short scale player and this doesn't feel much different. My full scale jazz bass, however, feels like a completely different animal and I struggle with it.

The weight is fine. Not heavy at all.

There's a tad of neck dive, but I play seated with a strap while leaning back in a chair, so it's not going to be a problem. I have a couple of short scale basses that are worse. :banghead:

The paint job looks fantastic, IMO. The frets could use a skosh of touching up, which I will tend to this Winter when the humidity is -100. The fretboard looks dry. I have fretboard oil around here somewhere, so no biggie there. The bridge looks a bit on the cheap side. May have to remedy that. Looks as though they used full scale strings, but they seem fine so I don't care.

$207.04 out the door after sales tax with stacked deals. I approve!

That's a bargain. I've been playing bass for the best part of my 68 years and have owned and played scores of basses from $100 HBs to my high end Spector and this imo is a very nice bass with a ton of potential.Though it's fine out of the box a bit of modding brings it to another level.A Gotoh bridge which is a great replacement that I've used quite a bit on my basses a good deal that can be had for around 40 bucks and a Stellar MM pup an excellent replacement for another C-note plus some electronic upgrades for cheap. These mods have made this puppy into something special.

I've read and listened to reviews that indicate the stock pickup is a bit dark & bassy. Has anyone installed a different pickup, and specifically was it able to bring some stronger highs and midrange punch? I'm used to using a neck and a bridge pickup together in basses to get that sort of sound, so I'm wondering if there is any way to achieve it on this bass with a brighter/punchier pickup?

Thanks for any advice, I am trying to decide if this would be a good purchase with the intent of upgrading the pickup right away to achieve this sort of tone.

Lots of folks have replaced their stock pickup, which is hardwired in series, hence why it sounds dark. You could get a brighter tone out of even a cheap GFS pickup wired in parallel paired with 500k pots.

It is definitely a bass worth buying and modding.

Reading thru Talkbass after a few months away, I came accross this thread.
I bought this all black and maple Jag H back in July from Thomann.
Now Thomann only list the LPB and the charcoal, the all black one is not listed anymore.
I kept it all stock, except for the strings, I put D'Addario Flatwound medium scale Chromes.
I like a lot the stock pickup which is totally noiseless. I just unscrewed it and I saw it has what look like ceramic bar magnets and an epoxy sealed compound. This means a very solid pickup, the pickup cover is firmly on, not moving, no dust or grease would get into the pickup, it reminds me of the EMG pickups which I also like for the neat epoxy sealed design. I personally think bar magnets are better than pole pieces as bars have a more even output, that's my opinion of course, YMMV. I like it as it is, wired in series, it's got a precionish sound and with the tone rolled off it is just as muddy as I want.
All else is also good, nice body finish, stock tuners work fine and hold tune really well, little neck dive easily solved with a wide strap, and the neck is great, smooth and fast, no sharp frets. I am really surprised by the quality of this bass for which I paid only 222 Euros.
