Well, i recently lost my bass due to some miscommunication with a friend. So I'm looking into a new one, i found this Squier vintage modified 70's jazz bass.

The reviews on it are pretty good but i thought I'd ask you guys what you thought of it. If its pretty decent for the money. Also if its not that good what would be a good bass thats kinda similar in style and price.

There has been tons of positive things on this board about the all of the Squier VM series basses, which includes the jazz, the P, the fretless J, and the telebass.

I have the P and absolutely love it. Bought it as a backup to my 73 P and have ended up playing it just as much. Incredible value. Thinking about getting the fretless to go along with it.

I Love mine in fact I think it sounds better then most Fenders, I got mine from a friend of mine at Fender 180.00. The only thing I changed was the bridge to a bad ass II pre slotted and the input jack. sounds great plays great after setup lowered the action. In fact I love the stock pickups and it stays in tune so I kept the stock tuners I may add a hipshot D tuner. The only thing I could say negative is you have to keep both volumes equal or you will get noise since they are single coil pickups 60 cycle hum. Play a few of them so you find one with a good neck that don't buzz or has very little and get a proper setup. I have not even played my other bass since I got this one. Oh ya it has a maple body and is heavy so get a good thick strap.

I've had 3 Modified Jazz Basses, the 70's Telecastor, and the fretless Jazz Bass by Squier and was impressed by the quality of all of them. Great values for $279.00 each. I really liked the Telecaster. I just gave them basic setup and they played and sounded great. I would advise to set aside some funds to replace the strings. But that's me as I prefer flatwounds over the roundwounds that come from the factory.

I have the vm p bass. I wouldnt give it up unless I got an mia p bass but that wont be for a while. The value is great It will need a new bridge the stock one seems kind of cheap and rattles and the saddles move around from side to side. And maybe new pickups. Mine wasnt growly enough so I replaced the pickup with a duncan spb3 and its great. I played the vm jazzes at guitar center and those were nice too. I already have a jazz bass so thats why I didnt pick one up. I wanted to but my girlfriend would kill me.

I picked up one of these on Craigslist for $160 back in March - it was less than a year old and the guy was going for an Acoustic so he was selling it. The bass was perfect as new.
I have owned two Vintage Fender Jazz Basses and an 85-86 Squire Jazz and this Bass shocked me by how good it sounded and nice it plays! I did not put it down and have not played the others till recently.

It is a tad heavy with the Maple Body - but it looks fantastic and plays freaking awesome and the stock pickups sound great (aside from the hum that was mentioned when you back of either Pup). Smoking Bass and I have seen many people added the BadAss and saying they are as good as the Marcus Jazz Basses minus the Active Pups. It would be interesting to put a nice preamp on this with the BadAss - right now I am digging it stock. Go try one - my guess is you'll leave the store with it. Good Luck!

I'm really GASing for a Squier Telebass. I played one and was impressed, but I wasn't crazy about the neck. A little too thin in profile for my tastes.

The thing I'm really GASing for is a butterscotch Fender '51 RI P-bass, but those are more than twice as much as the Squier Telebass.

I'm thinking about getting the Telebass then slowly modding it...refinishing, possibly replacing the neck...by the time I got finished I'd have as much in it as I would the RI '51 probably, but I wouldn't have to spend it all at once.

Can anyone comment about the tonal differences between the Telebass pup and the single-coil '51 RI pup?

Take a split pickup, mount it in a common housing and stick it at the base of the neck and it goes BOOM! Very strong boomy bass. Much like the old Gibson EBO. But it does have bright tones too. I actually liked the Telecastor bass best of all the 70's modifieds Squier offers.

I picked up a VM Jazz here on TB a few months ago and have been slowly modding it since. I put in an Audere JZ3 and upgraded the pickups to some Hanewinckel custom's, both bought through TB... :) The Audere is a fantastic preamp, transparent but with a ton of tonal control. The install couldn't be easier, either. It's a drop-in replacement and doesn't even require any soldering. This bass can really pull a convincing Marcus tone now. I also put in a black BAII and have some black tuners in the mail right now... I think it'll look sweet with the "Black and Tan" treatment.
