Squier Bronco Fantasy Mod

There is a long, exhaustive thread about mods to Broncos.

Personally, I went the minimalist route and created a tone monster. First I tried an S-D Hot Rails strat pickup, then a '51 P pickup (not a good match because the Bronco string spacing is narrower), then I found true faith and dropped in a TV Jones pickup from a Gretsch 2202 Electromatic Jr. Jet! I had to open up the E-string side of the cavity about 1/2" for it to fit, but it was an easy mod.

WOWZA!

Add a chrome Mustang stripe made with $5 of auto striping tape, a stick-on V8 emblem from AutoZone, and there you are. The bridge intonates fine, the tuners work nicely, the bass balances beautifully and the neck is just about perfect.

All it takes is the right pickup.

was the pickup you sent me on that at one point?

the Tele neck Hotrails sounds very nice in my bronco.

the stock pickup was useless for me. weak at best . and poor
string-to -string balance . it was a cheap ceramic 6 pole
squier guitar pickup. might've sounded ok on a guitar......
like thin poop on my Bronco Bass . the wood is very good
on mine - just the pickguard could be a bit more accurate
fit to the screw holes and controls. the precision-tele style quarter pound pickup
is purported to fit , i've never tried.

A few days ago I finally got a bronco, let me tell ya I love it. As a result of this I´ve been cking as much threads as I can in te last few days (when I´m not playing it). So a few questions popped up while I´m thinking how to convert it into a pocket-size bazooka.

1- What would hapen if I mess with string spacing? Adding a bridge with standard string spacing
2- Anyone out there tried the Dimarzio´s DP 127 on a Bronco?
3- Is a Hipshot Xtender too much? maybe I´m just blinded by love ;)

Well thanks in advance and excuse my english as is not my mother tongue. Down here se habla español :bassist:

1) I'm going to guess that a standard bridge might space the strings too far apart and force the E and G strings off the edge of the fretboard at some point along the neck. I'm also going to venture that it might put some lateral stress on the ends of the nut, which is cut for a certain string spacing. Just educated guesses though...no scientific proof.

2) As P-style pickups go, I like the Dimarzio Split Ps (DP127s) but I haven't seen them on a Bronco. I suppose you could mount them so they fit the Bronco's smaller string spacing, although they might have to be angled to avoid "string overlap".
