Which Sam Ash? I work at the one in San Antonio. We have a bunch of the white/tort P’s but I haven’t received a single daphne blue j bass yet.

I did some nut work over the weekend. The gap between the first fret and string was at .025” Way high for my taste. I don’t blame the factory. They don’t want buzzing first frets and the customer has a choice of different strings so that will affect on how low to set it.
Anyways..I was being kinda cheap because the nice StuMac files are pricey for me. More on that at the end. So, I tried those “rod” style fret files. They are pretty cheap and I am not a pro luthier so why not.

So... they are small. About 2.5” You need to hold both ends and go back and forth. Retuning and checking periodically. They are are not super sharp so no worries of going too far on one pass. The E and A file are sturdy. The D and G are a little thin and flex. But they do the job!!! I was really pleased with the results. I ended up doing a few basses and they kept the sharpness. Now...these are okay but I would by the StuMac files if I really had to do more. I did 4 basses.
End result was sweet!! I went down to .020” Not super low but feels a whole lot better. Notes don’t go sharp either when fretted at the first. I may go to .018” but I am kinda nervous. Felt proud of myself that I did it on my own!! Here is a pic. Not sure if you can tell but hey we love pics right.LOL

I had to set the strings higher than I prefer because of fret buzz on my E and A strings on my P. Neck probably needs some work.
They buzz at the 1st fret? What do you have relief set at? I like .010” at the 8th fret.
^Did you use a fret rocker or something similar to see which frets might be high?
Ended up returning it and getting a Sterling Stingray Ray4. The neck and bridge were in bad shape and I didn’t want to put out the money to fix the issues. The bridge saddle on the E string was pretty bent. Wasn’t thrilled with the weight either, felt close to 10 pounds.
Good luck... my experience (with at least 10 of them) is that they are even more inconsistent... they’re also made by the same hands in the same Indonesian factory as your Squier Classic Vibe. I’ve been waiting on a good one to come through the door because I can get one for around 200 bucks... still waiting.Ended up returning it and getting a Sterling Stingray Ray4. I really like the 5 string Jazz version. Hope they come out with a few more color choices. I don't need another black bass and the natural just doesn't do it for me.5 string version as well!

From what I saw, the 70 model looked like the bridge pup was closer to the bridge than the 60 model. Is it just me, or do the '60s and '70s jazzes shown have the same pickup spacing?
I thought they were Korean made? And I heard they were very consistent! Have they changed production to somewhere else recently?
