Hey folks! Longtime reader/new member here.
Just had to weigh in on this whole classic vibe squier thing. Yesterday I ordered one of those new CV 60’s pbasses online. I’ve been looking at this new CV series since they started showing up in online stores early this year and there really isn’t much in the way of reviews about it. I’m definitely into the sound of pbasses and I’m looking forward to trying it out. Found a great deal on it for <$500 taxes in and free shipping. I was looking at the fender mim mustang p/j for a long time as well, but I decided I couldn’t really afford to lay out $700+ for a new bass in the foreseeable future. I also kinda wanted a more traditional P, and don’t ever have much use for a bridge pup. I’m not into that jbass bridge pup tone. The only VM p-style basses I could find online were p/j.
I own a few VM instruments (including a VM baritone jazzmaster) and a mic CV duo sonic, and I love them all! My main bass atm is a squier VM jag ss I bought a few years ago and upgraded with a hand wound P pickup custom made by a guy who lives close to me here in NL. I’ve gigged it and recorded with it lots, and I still can’t believe how great that bass is, considering I only paid $259 for it! With the new pup and a set of ghs flats, this thing rocks! I mean, as far as I’m concerned, if I upgraded the bridge, it’d be a 10/10 (although the stock bridge is fine). I’ve played fenders that didn’t feel as nice to me (including a short scale mustang) and the pickup it has in it now sounds as good/better to me than a lot of fenders I’ve played. Even when it had the stock pickup, it sounded better to me than a highway one fender I borrowed from my brother, I honestly couldnt tell you why (I was debating buying it off him or trading one of my guits for it, but didn’t). Call me crazy. The last few weeks, I’d put the old roundwounds back on my jag ss and realized, hey, it’d be nice to have 2 p-type basses, one with flats, one with rounds......so here I am with a brand new oly white squier CV 60’s pbass on the way!
As I’m sure my Canadian comrades here can attest to, fender prices are super high the last few years. I’ve been opting for squier instruments for awhile now because for the price, they’re often just as playable imo as their fender counterparts and I don’t see the point in spending that much more when I can invest a lil bit and upgrade parts if I really need to. I’m not what I’d call a ‘gear snob’ and I already have all the fender stuff I’m gonna own, unless some insane used deal comes my way. The way I see it, if an instrument feels good, sounds reasonably good and is affordable, its worth it.
It always seemed to me that there are real gems and pieces of crap right accross the fmic spectrum from the lowliest of squiers to the standard mia. I’ve gone into music stores and found myself dumbfounded at how terrible some mia instruments played/felt and picked up a cheapo squier and it felt better! Now, I don’t think many ppl are going to say that the pickups or hardware in any mia fender aren’t a cut above most squiers in a lot of cases, but for me, personally, I know that I can always upgrade that stuff. No big deal.
