Squier Classic Vibe 2019

The surf green mustang and 2 tone sunburst SCPB having me starting to GAS hard. I already have the 3 tone SB and tort 60’s Jazz Bass

Actually the mustang also has me kind of gassing for a bronco at less than half the price...

Unless you really want to mod a Bronco, I think the CV would be worth the extra money.

After seeing some of the real nice modded Broncos on this site, I got one with the idea of trying to make a Mustang out of it.
But after pricing out tuners, pickup, controls, and pick guard, I couldn't find a Mustang bridge.
I ended up returning it and looking for a VM Mustang bass, which I finally found.

There are other, less expensive ways to go with it, and if you have an idea of what you want, it might be the way to go for you.
But the CV Mustangs look really nice. Just right.

I'm cross-posting this from other relevant threads…

Just last weekend, I picked up a brand-new Squier Classic Vibe '70s Jazz, one of the new generations built in their Indonesia factory. In a word…fantastic! Specifically, I grabbed one in a natural finish with a bound & blocked maple neck. Here's the iron-sights…
  1. The fit and finish is great. I tried slipping a single post-it note into the neck pocket. On one side, it only made it halfway in and on the other, it couldn't even gain entry.
  2. The frets are pretty good. They could use a microscopic waving of a file on a few of the ends, but it doesn't interfere with playing. Call it 9 out of 10. Interesting thing about these new CV's, the binding does not cover the fret ends. Personally, I have no beef with that, I'm just reporting.
  3. The body's grain is very nice. From the front, it almost appears to be a single piece of soft maple. Looking at the back, it's definitely a two-piece body, but the matching was still nicely done. The neck is also a two-piece. The back has an interesting grain, but the fretboard has this amazingly beautiful-but-subtle quilted look. The finish has a slightly amber, vintage tint.
  4. Sonically, it's super-sweet. Deep lows, but with the growl you expect from Jazz pickups. Plus, it's quiet as all hell when both pups are dialed up to 100%.
I could see FMIC making damn sure the rollout of their newest Classic Vibes are held to very high quality control standards. If that is the case, I hope they maintain it for years to come, 'cuz this one's a beauty.
…and some pictures I snapped earlier today! :snaphappy:

It's kinda hard to make out, both due to the lighting and the slight amber tint to the finish, but this model's Squier logo has a gold border.

Those el-cheapo tuning machines, though. Punts it for me. Thankfully, plenty of other tuning machines fit those holes...

The tuners on my 70’s Jazz aren’t any worse than those on my ‘97 MIM P.
Not saying that some drop-in Hipshots wouldn’t hurt but the stock ones are just fine in my book & are definitely doing their job.

Fender has built its enviable place in the music world on “same old same old” spiced up with some new colors every so often.

Why mess with a product formula that’s had a 60+ year winning streak with no end in sight?

They already tried that with the Dimension. And just look what that got them.
I agree with you on that. There can't be many products out there that were created perfect first time around and remain virtually unchanged for over 50 years. Fenders are still my favourite basses. Awesome in my book

I FINALLY got my hands on a new CV! My local store took their sweet time ordering one, lol. All they had was the 70s Jazz in maple. IDK if they had more before I got there or will get more- forgot to ask!

Neck was very nice. I'd probably do a little fret rounding, but overall nice fret work. Not a fan of the gloss neck, I'd want to sand that down, but that's a personal preference. Vintage tinted was a nice touch!

Pickups sounded fantastic. Neck was smooth and full. Bridge was sharp and stanky. Together was classic jazz goodness! Played through a rumble 200c.

IDK why everyone complains about the hardware, maybe we were spoiled by the old CVs, lol. But for the price point it seems perfectly acceptable.

My main complaint was the weight, man it was HEAVY! But I remember this being a thing with the VMs in maple. Are people finding the other colors to be any lighter???

Overall, very well made, but the weight would rule it out for me. Looking forward to testing a Precision! And maybe that new Jaguar!

The tuning machines are probably the same ones as on the VM. I have two VM’s and the machines are fine. Obviously, not as good as Hipshot or Schaller, but good enough for a sub-$400 bass and they stay in tune even in gig-bags.
I can’t stand the vintage metal plate bridges, though, it’s the only thing I’d replace as far as hardware goes.

i got the black one and it’s fairly balanced. Not too light not too heavy. Of course it’s poplar, not maple.

I had GAS for the black one since I already have a Natural VM...but now that I see the black one is Poplar, I have second thoughts. I really love the heft and tone of the Maple body. I have had Poplar instruments before and wasn’t too keen on how they felt or sounded acoustically. I may need to rethink my GAS...

GAS is killer lol
Personally, I don’t like the maple ones that much because the grain tends to be very minimal. I’ve seen some with high grain of wood and that imo makes the bass pop a lot more.
What’s weird is that even the sunburst CV 70s Jazz Bass is also poplar even though you can still see the wood but hey only reason I got the black one was because it’s the only color they offer left handed! Still pretty happy with it though

Both CV and VM has nice and stable tuning mechine. But I prefer the nickel coat ,longer shaft and more accurate vintage shape elephant tuning peg on CV.
I have CV P (recent, but Pre 2019) I have a set of those vintage Fender tuners I'm thinking about putting on it. They are larger and look like they will fit, but I wonder if there are any issues reqarding making that swap?

Hi chancygram :)

I wonder if the control plate isn't standard, or if the Allparts guard is funky.

I think it's the control plate positioning.

Fortunately, it looks like the Allparts guard is the problem in my case. Useless!

The problem is that the front pickup route and the control cavity are not two different routes

but just one big hole! That 's the super bummer for everybody, who wants to rock that bass without a pg! :banghead:

The control plate always covered the complete control cavity on the older Jazz bass models.

And the pick up route would not need to be covered at all!

Good luck finding a pg that covers that mess.

may the bass be with you

Alright so I ordered an Allparts parchment guard.
Bugger.

At least all the screw holes line up!

I compared my pickguards. Your allparts one is shorter after the two screws. The control plate is fine. Dragonfire pickguards offered a tight fit on my Classic Vibe and all holes aligned perfectly!!!

I ordered a pick guard from eBay; made in and shipped from China, $10 to my door. It is advertised as one that fits MIM Jazz V, and I installed it on my Squier. I had to shave a little on the lower bout at the the neck heel for about 10 seconds with my wife’s nail file. Fits pretty good. Save for the 1/8” gap at the bottom of the neck, but I think that’s a Squier issue, not the first time I have this gap on a Squier.
