Different strokes. I hate tomato soup, Fiesta Red is growing on me and not crazy about CAR. However that 50s P is schweet!!!!

Fiesta Red took awhile to grow on me as well, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked it. Especially with a black pearl or white pearl pickguard. I ordered mine in black pearl today so hopefully I'll have some good pics of it up soon. I still really like the Sonic Blue though and would have a tough time turning one down if someone wanted to trade. I think Sonic Blue with a black pearl pickguard would look pretty hot.

Well, 20+ year drummer checking in to the cool kids club. I've picked around on just about any instrument I could get my hands on basically all my life but for some reason when I was a kid I settled on the drums. Basically in recent history I have gotten tired of my friends and fellow band members calling me a non-musician so I've decided I better get serious about something that actually plays notes. I've owned a couple of basses in the past but they either ended up being sold to my dad who plays or traded off in favor of drum equipment or firearms.

Last week I stopped by my local GC and picked up the white/tort CV Jazz but after doing a little research and talking it over with some friends I decided that a P bass might work better for me. I like the weight difference also. So I did a little web surfing and discovered that my GC happened to have a used CV Fiesta Red/tort P in stock. To make a long story longer, yesterday I headed up there with my J bass and left the store with the used P that looks brand new, a brand new Acoustic B20 for the house, and a cable for about $9 out of pocket. I feel pretty good about that deal. So now I've spent pretty much all day on TB looking through setup instructions, pickup and string options and looking for pictures of different pick guards on fiesta red. I'm thinking about dr high beam strings and a black pearl pick guard but I'm still not set on pickups yet. I'm not really set on the black pearl pg either but I will be ordering one in some color in the next couple of days. Anyway, you guys have a great site and I am going to enjoy my stay here. I have so much to learn. Now off to watch some "Bass for Beginners" dvd's and youtube videos so I can finally feel like one of the musicians.

Nice bass but I would stay away from black pearl. It will clash pretty bad with that red and basically any color except black.
Try parchment for the classic look.

Oops! I already ordered one yesterday. If it looks hideous I'll check into parchment.

I appreciate the welcome and I have not heard that drummer joke but I'm sure I've heard just about every other one! They usually like to hit me with "what do you call a guy sitting in a room full of musicians".

I think I may have my pickup choice narrowed down to Dimarzio DP122's so hopefully in a week or two I'll have this thing setup and sounding nice. It already sounds surprisingly nice considering the price but I think it could stand just a little more punch.

I'd still like to see a picture of it if you do put it on. I have a plain black PG on my Fiesta Red P but think it looks a bit strange.
In the right light, when the bass looks more red it looks fine but when the colour is more pink i think the black looks too plain.

Just for kicks I turned the factory tort guard black and white to get a rough idea and I think I like it. We'll see what it looks like with the actual black pearl guard though.

So Monday I traded my VM Jazz plus $75 for a CV 50's P. It's a totally different animal from my 60's P. I have to say I like the pickup for the 60's better, but the neck from the 50's is more comfy on my giant hands. I'll get a pic of the new family up soon.

IMO, much better looking than the tort. I like it.

Well, my CV 50s is gonna get a little makeover. I bought some 51 RI tuners, a tele bridge, body ferrules, and new wiring/pots/jack. Looks like the bridge isn't gonna be too much work to add. I'm not doin' the job though. I put the bridge on with only the center screw and all the other screw holes are covered so looks like will only need to drill new holes.

I also ordered a Fender 50s Pbass logo (I know, lame..blah blah blah....haha). The guy doin' the job suggested I add it since the bass is gettin' a relic treatment too and now would be the best time. My original plan was to have a Squier logo remade to kind of look similar to the 50s Fender decal, but didn't think it was gonna work. I also considered just a blank headstock, but whatever...it's my bass....right?

I also bought a extra neck so tryin' to decide which one I want to use. The original neck (dated 3/10/11) is a little darker tint and not really any grain pattern. The other neck I got (dated 12/23/10) is a little lighter, has nice straight line grains all the way down the board and headstock. It also fits a little tighter than original.

So be on the lookout guys, there will be a loaded tinted CV 50s neck in the classifieds soon! Plan was to get a Dirnt body for the neck but was told, the neck will not fit the body. So that plan is out.

I'd go with whichever neck is stiffer. If you're lucky that will be the bottom neck, which has the cooler looking near-quartersawn grain and the tighter fit in the pocket.

By that I mean the one that's less flexible. Stiff necks seem to sound and play better. They have fewer dead spots and oddball resonances, and they feel more solid.

Not much of a difference vs a $3000 custom bass. As a backup it sounds pretty good. I'm looking at buying a classic vibe J & leaving it stock as a backup to a Bongo & Sterling

I was looking at a $1100 used 2011 MIA J deluxe or a used $700 MIA 08 standard.

I have a MIM that needs upgraded electronics, tuners, bridge

Not sure which of the 4 options is the best
1. CV
2. Used MIA standard 700
3. Used MIA deluxe 1100
4. Massive overhaul to MIM

Leaning towards a CV though

I guess you guys already know this but the CV 60's P bass neck has a nut width that is 2mm or 0.025" wider than the standard p-bass neck. Interesting.

Are you sure?

A MIA is 41.3mm and a CV P is 42mm. Less than 1mm difference.
