Squier CV P Bass.

Yep, you never know unless you ask. :)

yeh, i used to get deals from them all the time, then maybe a year ago (can't remember exactly when it was), they said the new policy from corporate was the price you pay is what's on the hang tag. i stopped going in there not long afterward. perhaps in the meantime they have eased up on that...

I would think they would have to to be able to stay in business. The music business isn't like other retail businesses, so you can't run it that way. I remember them saying that too.

I've got a fiesta red CV P, and it has quickly become my #1 axe, replacing a mexican jazz, a Geddy Lee Jazz, and a 72' Jazz. The CV is stock, and the only issue I've had so far is needing to put some locktite on the strap pegs because the bass wood body is very soft. I gig with this bass and have now recorded with it and get compliments on it everywhere I go. Can't say enough good things about it.

All that being said, it is my first P bass so I'm not sure if I'm blown away by it's tone simply because I should have been playing a P this whole time or because it's just really that good. But either way, it's what I've been trying to make my jazz basses sound like for years.

Ok, then. I went into the local GC this morning to make certain the fiesta red CV that I saw there a couple days ago was still there and it was. Step 2 was to begin the bargaining process. Unfortunately, it was just after opening time and none of my 'go to' guyz were there yet.

So I ask the nearest dude about what I will have to pay him to take the bass off their hands and he sez $349 + tax. He wasn't budging off that hang tag price but did tell me to go to their website and print off a 'trade in, trade up' coupon and that would get me 15% off. Ok, I can do that.

I get to work a little while later, Google the coupon, print it out and in the fine print it EXCLUDES both Fender and Squier products. I guess I need to go back in there every day and ask someone different until I get the answer I was hoping for.

This is why I stopped going to GC. Too many variables...

Having recently been in the market, my sense it that the MSRP is twice what large chain retailers (GC, Sam ash, etc) pay. They usually sell for 30% off MSRP, making about 20% to cover their overhead, advertising, salaries, etc. So getting another 10-15% gets close to their break even point.

On a lower priced item, the dollar amount of profit becomes small enough that an additional discount may not be worthwhile to them.

Of course all bets are off on used items since you don't know what they paid or what value they gave in trade.

the fiesta red cv is now mine. went back to GC this morning, talked to some people i know this time, traded in a used drum machine and got outta there with the bass for $278, total cost.

now, should i mod it or leave it alone? dimarzio model p and d'a chromes would be my first thought. beyond that, i think its good to go. may be good to go already, haven't had time to really mess with it outside the store yet. its difficult for me to keep my hands off anything stock however, so its likely to get modded to some degree.

I put the DiMarzio P's in my P bass and honestly I can't tell enough of a difference to say that it was worth it. Maybe if you were going with some higher end P bass pickups, like Nordstrand or Lindy Fralin you could tell. But the DiMarzios were hardly any different. I'm thinking of trying some other ones than the DM's but haven't decided what. Not that the bass didn't sound great before, I just like to experiment, like you. :) (Btw, I've already changed out the pots and .47 orange cap, which also weren't much of a difference except it took out some of the highs. I think I liked it better before.)

I have the Fiesta Red and I love it. The only mods I have done so far are a real Switchcraft Jack, a 60’s NOS black beauty cap and a set of strap locks. I would like to install the pickup and bridge cover but I have heard that the bridge cover will not clear the bridge. Is this true?

You have to purchase an oversize bridge cover. You can get them at basspartsresource.com I believe.

well, my first thought were the dimarzios because i have a spare pair of those. i am hesitant to spend another $100+ to upgrade the pups on a <$300 instrument when I have other basses more worthy (MIA/CIJ Fenders). If were to do so, however, my choice would be nordstrand. might look around for a deal on a pair of NP4. can't hurt, i suppose (except that i might buy them)...

You can try the DM's and report back. I'm a bit curious if your experience would be the same as mine. I've been thinking about the Nordstrand too, but if its' a bass you like the feel of, then does it really matter how much it originally cost? :)
