Squier Deluxe Dimension Bass (IV & V string)

I played a Squier Dimension V yesterday, and I liked it much more than the MIM Dimension V. The voicing of the Squier preamp is much better. The MIM preamp's treble was way too harsh for my tastes. The Squier neck is quite good. Another TB has measured the spacing at the bridge, and it is actually 19mm, and that is great for me. The bass simply feels like a mid level instrument like MIM Deluxe or a Skyline 55-01, the only thing that seems budget is looking at that multi piece basswood body, but even that does not negatively impact the tone. The tone is much closer to a Stingray than the MIM Dimension. The tone and string spacing make this a great catch. The B string was also tight, and was quite clear. This bass is a killer value.
I completely agree with all of your detailed assessment. The basswood pieces matched up nicely on the sunburst bass I received. For me, I couldn't get used to the 5 string neck........BUT that is because MY 5 string (TRBX305) is a much more slim neck. Could I get used to the Dimension? I'm sure I could, but I play 4 string basses so much more that it makes more sense for me to swap out for the IV.

Would anyone here have enough time with the new Squire Dimension V to say they would prefer it to an Ibanez ATK? Say, like a ATK205? Same price point....

I would compare it more to the old ATK405, which was more expensive than the ATK205. The only difference is that the old ATK was heavy ash and the Squier Dimension is basswood.

Awesome! Thank you for the Comparison. I have had an ATK 305 and 405 and kinda regret parting with them. Maybe the Squire Dimension can help me through my ATK grieving process. :smug:

As Robin might say, holy impulse buy, Batman! I picked it up Friday, but I really didn't get a chance to play it until this evening. All of my initial impressions are reinforced. This bass would be a solid deal at $650, let alone $334. I bought it during a sale for $288 after taxes. The neck is wide and thin. The frets are excellent. The preamp is completely hum free with very usable frequencies. It weighs 8.5-9 lbs. the bridge is high mass, and the tuners seem to be firm with no slippage. The tone is very much like a Stingray, I'm sure if I directly a/b'ed it to a Stingray, the Stingray would would be more aggressive, but I am not sure if by how much. Generally, I like the recent Squiers, but this bass has taken their game up maybe two more notches. A serious player could gig or record this bass with no mods. I see this bass as comparable to a G&L Tribute or Skyline 55-01. It is much better than the MIM even though that version has a 18v preamp and an ash body. If the MIM preamp is the same as it was last year, it is a lot less usable than the Squier preamp when it comes to treble frequencies. I measured it, and spacing is a legitimate 19mm at the bridge, but the neck is not as wide as the Sadowsky I played last week. The bass is very easy to slap on. It is 1 3/4" at the nut. I need to lower the action a touch, but beyond that, it is perfect.

I will probably do a video with a couple of basslines from Teena Marie songs since her music featured Stingray a lot.
I will post some pictures before that.

I love ATK's as well and actually have a ATK205 for sale in the classifieds. I have owned many 90's ATK's and I can honestly say the 205 is right up there with build and tone. You might regret not getting a ATK. Plus the new electronics package is even more versatile than the original. But it still can get that stingray bite that we all love. I think I am starting to talk myself out of selling it.

The Squiers are going to everywhere soon, it won't be hard to judge their quality once that happens.

I'm playing hooky during the sermon to post that the B string on this Dimension literally spooked me because it was so strong and clear! I know Squiers have been known to be inconsistent at times, but this Dimension V of mine has the sort of B string that I usually hear on really expensive 34" five strings. In addition to the great B string, the bass is pretty light and compact compared to Forum V which is 35" scale and nearly 11 lbs. I am going to get along just fine with this bass, and it is a keeper. I have more basses than at any point in my life, seven, but none of them are bad. They are all worth having.:hyper::bassist::hyper:

I lost my self control and ordered another Ibby ATK instead of trying the Dimension V first. I KNOW I will be happy with the ATK, but making me wonder what that Dimension would feel like in my stubby little hands.

Some more specs: my Dimension is 9lbs 8oz. I compared it to a DJ5, and I think it is probably 18.5mm, not a full 19mm, the Lakland has a noticeably wider neck. After a comparison with a Stingray, I would say its tone is very close to an ATK.

One more thing to note is that its electronics are extremely quiet. I played it at a store that always has a lot of buzz, and it was even more quiet than a Stingray! That is remarkable for a sub $350 bass.

I wonder if a standard Jazz neck would fit on one of these.

I'd be wary - rather than the standard 4 bolt, rectangle neck plate, the Squier Dimension uses a 5-bolt plate, with a rounded corner at the underside of the neck.

The Modern Player Dimension basses LOOK to have the same size & shape plate, and they have a Jazz-width nut. They're discontinued, I think, or going that way - so you may find one cheap used, or being blown out at a store.

So far I'm loving my Dimension. Its actually making me consider getting an American Deluxe model in the future, so I guess they're doing their job.
