Squier/Doom Bassquiers 49: Squiers The Beef?

It is definitely punch and has clarity but not the deep old school bass in my head, regardless of Equing. Might just be in my head though.

The old school 2-15" thump is the Yamaha (sunn clone) that I have. Toast has the real deal Sunn cab that mine was based on. I wish these popped up more frequently. That cab is all kinds of old school.

The Carvin B cabs are pretty good too. Scored my first 1-15" for $215 from their ebay store. It was so good, I bought the second one as new for $300 (didn't want to wait for another one to pop up as blem).

I recommend the Carvin 1-15" cabs for a really good , budget option 15.

My rig could handle 8 of these, and I would be really happy. My only complaint is that the tolex seems really cheap.

i know theres lots of pie charts and graphs that say dont mix speaker sizes (which i 100% disagree with) but ill tell ya right now the sound of my old 810 by itself vs the 810 with a 215 added was night and day. this was with the same head, bass, and fuzz.

+1. Some combinations work regardless of what the charts say. That is one thing I wish more people in the amps forum would get. Some rigs slay, whether the charts say so or not.

Oh well....

Maybe in straight doom, but I definitely play some lines in Supervoid that push the limits of my playing, including some parts where I'm playing as fast as physically possible.

And I realize you're mostly joking. Just saying, the way I play in Supervoid technique is definitely important.

Likewise, sometimes my figures just cant move fast enough, especially if they are cold, but once they warm up its like I can play again.

The guy sold that reel to reel from under us, so that sucks...

But we got the show opening for Samothrace! So that fvckin ROCKS!

Had a great practice, we should have our new slow song done by the show. We tried it a full step down, a lot better, MOAR HEAVY! We tried some our other songs a full step down too, but it kinda made it too low, more monotone, it took too much highs away. And kinda made us sound more doom then stoner. Not that thats a bad thing, but those song are just better only a half step down.

More volume is generally interpreted as sounding better, there is certain level of psychoacoustics at play here.

For me the biggest concerns are power handling and sensitivity disparities. Yes there are going to be phase concerns, but if those anomalies sound good to you, then they sound good to you (that doesnt mean they sound consistent though).

A generic 410 is going to have about twice the true power power handling of a 115. It is also going to have some difference in sensitivity. Depending on the difference of sensitivity and difference in power handling, the 410 +115 combo may not even get as loud as the 410 by itself with out blowing up the 115.

Im generally a fan of "more is better" but I would prefer to make "more" work for me in the best way possible ("Best way" being some what subjective).

Thanks, I think I would rather cheap tolex, than the carpet that my girlfriends cats love to scratch overnight and rub against and leave cat hair all over, yeesh.

Maybe my problem is a phase issue with the kick drum...

Is that why people go for 2X15s, 2X12s instead of two separate stacked like a 15 over a 15, 12 over 12? Sorry for all the newbie cab questions.

I was just going to ask what you all thought of 12's

Probably going to take some heat for this one...

Speaker diameter doesnt determine "punch", or "clarity", or "low end", or any other adjective that is used to describe tone. Its about the collection of specs that go into the cab as a whole. A specific speaker may sound vary different in different cabs. Or a cab may sound very different depending on the speaker loaded into it. Judge each cab as a whole, and by how it sounds, not by the size of the drivers in it.

All that said, there are well implemented and poor implemented cabs that use speakers of all sizes. As far as full range 12's go, the three top contenders for me would:

Mesa PH 412
Bergantino NV 412
GK Neo 412

None of which would be in my list of top 10 cabs to own. :D

Might be, perhaps that could be fixed with a bit of eq work. Might be the room you are playing in too, some just suck and sound like mud regardless of what you do. I would start with everything at noon, and work on cutting frequencies out one by one, until you find some clarity in your sound.

No, that is just a form factor choice. Some prefer one big cab, some prefer two smaller ones. Some prefer the sound of one cab, and it doesnt have a split 11x or 21x alternative.

Stacking identical cabs won't have the power-disparity issues that you get from mixing a 4x10 with a 1x15 or two different 4x10s or 2x15s

I stack two ported 1x15 cabs with no issues. They are identical. I prefer having two smaller cabs so I can fit them both in my car. My current car is big enough for a fridge, but when I bought these cabs I was driving a sunfire so having two cabs was the way to go.

Funny you brought up Carvin. I was thinking of checking this out on the weekend as I have to go to birthday party in the area on Saturday.

could be more volume, but even if its perceived to sound better to your ear, i always trust my ear and not the science.

and as long as you make sure youre impedence is good and youre not gonna blow your cab, those differences arent a big deal IMO. hell you could always get a second head and run them both, that way you have total control as to what you have coming out of both, so they can blend more effectively.

more amps/more cabs = more awesome

Sayin' :D

Depends on what you are pushing them with. There are lots of cases of people blowing up their 15 in combination with a 410, most of the time because they couldnt even hear it failing. And it depends on what you are doing with your gear. A bunch of cabs with a ~200 watt tube head? sure probably not going to over power a big stack of cabs. I use a 3kw power amp, I can smoke a lot of cabs with that amp if I throw common sense out of the window.

+1

I am just of the mind that more amps/cabs that play nice with each other sounds more awesome than amps/cabs that do not play well with each other.

If I find something that works well, then I want to know why. Then I want to see if I can make it work better.
