Thinking of picking one of these up but I'm reading that the pickups are underwhelming...anyone replaced the pickups on theirs yet and if so, was it a big improvement?

Haven't heard that here. To my ears the "P" pickup sounds fine. The J is a little meh, but I only use that to color the tone.
Regarding the string guage, I saw that the new Mustangs have .40 - .60 - .75 - .95. Is it possible that this is what is on our Jags?
Like others have said, the P pickup is fine, the J is weak. My wife doesn't know it yet, but she's going to be getting me a DiMarzio DP126 set for my birthday this year.
I wanted maple neck from a bronco to go on a black body of one of these.
My silver one is amazing , I really think I got like one of the best basses squier has made , no way am I messing with this one.

i would say that may be right. i tried to measure the strings with my caliper but it wasn't accurate enough.
40-95 GFS strings slide into the nut slots no problem though.

That's funny. I originally was gonna get silver cuz it looks classy. I got red instead and up close that deep Candy Apple really sparkles, but Silver is awesome too.

I almost have mine stealthed, just need to paint or make a new control plate.
I have been playing it out quite a bit and really enjoy it. The sound is great, I'm even starting to like the j pickup. I was going to replace it, but I think I will let it ride for now.
I played it Friday evening, then switched to the p bass for Saturday. What a difference!
The p neck felt like a log, heavy and sluggish LOL. I almost switched at break, but was talked out of it. By the end of the night I was enjoying the p, but it sure as heck doesn't do it for me like the ss jag! I'll try to get some pics today and post them.

What strings do you guys put on those ??? The .105 long scale string will not fit into the tuner !!!

Frankly, I have lost patience trying to find info on how to read pickup specs in the Pickups and Electronics forum, so please pardon my igonrance here.
There is also a P pickup from the same source. The two of them together cost about what one of the jazz pickups you guys are talking does.
