Sorry I took so long to reply, Luds. The full, technical name is "Squier Standard Precision Bass Special". It was meant to be a "best of both worlds" bass, what with the extra bridge pickup and Jazz-spec'd neck. The current crop of Squier P/J's, the Affinity and VM, are both called "Precision PJ". They have the extra pickup, but a Precision neck.

But yeah, I not only have the Jazz and the P-Bass Special, but for a "I'm never gonna do nuthin' with it but I want the complete set anyway besides it's my birthday" gift to myself, I grabbed a used Squier Standard Stratocaster in the same color scheme. Once the weather warms up a bit more, I'll do a proper photo-shoot.

Not quite mistaken, just a little off the mark.

I'd traded away the Jazz to help a friend get her daughter's first bass. I won't say I regretted the trade, but I did miss that "matched set". The funny thing is, on a random sweep through Craigslist (via Search Tempest…a great way to check through their entire database, one region at a time), I saw my bass being sold by the guy I traded it to. He was even selling it along with an older, discontinued bass amp. I immediately contacted him, but he'd already sold it.

I thought that chapter was closed forever, but last year I decided to get a dedicated "beater/travel bass", so it was back to Search Tempest for me. Something I often refer to as "The Little Voice In The Back Of My Head" started urging me to expand the range of my search. Sure enough, I found a Pewter Jazz out in Kentucky for a very reasonable price.

I contacted the seller and asked if he'd be willing to ship it. He told me he had loads of experience shipping guitars and tacked on a very reasonable bump for shipping. Now, be aware that I've held several shipping/receiving jobs in the past. With that in mind, lemme tell ya…this was the absolutely-most-awesomest-bubble-wrap-jobs I've ever seen. There was no case, but I had no doubt the bass was super-protected during shipment. I wish I'd thought of taking a pic first, but I was too excited to open the damn thing up.

Since then, I've slightly modded it, but nothing too expensive, otherwise it wouldn't qualify as a "beater" anymore. I put in a pair of Classic Vibe neck pups (remember kiddies, Standards are routed for identically-sized pickups!) and a Hipshot Drop-D tuner I'd bought for another bass that turned out not to fit properly (my bad…not theirs). I also have a hi-mass bridge from a Blacktop Jazz on it, but I think I'll replace the original one, not just for the weight-factor, but I may use the BT-bridge for another project. That and, as usual for the Standard Line, it's not an exact match (4 out of 5 screw-holes line up…not too bad though).

These are mine.
CVJ and VM. I swapped the necks and happily surprised how well they look and fit each other. CVJ looks funkier with maple fretboard, but the VM looks even better with the rosewood board. i love my VM even more!

After all these years, my first 5-string. "Crafted in Indonesia" and a sweet player for $300. Is an American Standard $1,100 better? I don't know, I've never played one.

The LPB Precision body is a MIM..so I suppose it is not a true Squier

I bought my first and only Squier Bass , and it is a great instrument right out if the box. I posted some, what I would consider helpful hints and photo's in the TB bass section without much love . Soooooo, I would like to join the Squier Club and repost my mods. where someone may be able to save a few steps and money, if they choose to improve the Squire VM 5 P Bass. -------Leon As I mentioned in the original post, first was Flat Chromes Light, second step was pots, cap, covered wiring and input jack. Third was Pups. The difference is amazing. Total cost was around $145.00, plus your choice of strings. I spent $41.00 for strings. I hope the pictures can help someone considering a mod. or two.------Thanks for looking-----Leon

ilike5's....What brand pups did you use in you upgrade for the Precision?? I am surprised that the full size pots would fit..I thought that they would be to wide in diameter. Thanks for the pics and info..

Hi there,

It is the Squier "Artist Series", the Squier Steffi Stephan Vintage Jazz Bass V. They were 250 Pieces made of this. There was a little Graphic on the upper Horn, but I've put some white Foil on it.

Every thing fits as it should. The pots are a matched set of CTS 250K, full size. From Guitar Electronics. The HOLES for the pots and input jack will need to be enlarged a bit. (get the kit as it is cheaper, but ask for the matched set of pots). Also, the original knobs will not fit the new pots. Best to order new ones with the pot kit. The pickups are Nordstrand N5P-F (as in Fender from The Bass Place). The bass is the Squire VM 5 P Bass. The maple/maple neck is the only option. To sum it up, it is an easy DIY project that gets you really close to the sound of the $1,400.00 AM Standard, except for the lack of a H/S case. Thanks for looking.--------Leon

Those basses are fantastic! I have recently had the urge to add a Squier P bass to my stable. That red one looks lovely.

So you can still get the knurled chrome knobs, just like the originals?

I can't say about the original parts, but the pair that I used was a Fender part in a bag, marked Tele and P Bass. Around six or seven dollars. Also, I should mention that the pots had the short split shaft. A small bag of bushings from Guitar Electrics will fit over the split shaft of the pot, then the set screw in the knob will secure it to the shaft. -------Leon
