Mine is starting to turn yellow so I thought a White pick guard would look a little better than a black one on a yellowing bass

OK, I just measured the nut width on my 2003 Affinity P bass, my Squier Mike Dirnt bass, the VM P bass and one of my 1994/95 MIM Fender P basses and all of them are right around 1 5/8 in in width. So maybe it was just the original white VM P basses with the 1.5in nuts. I know Squier used to have a Precision Bass Special Edition bass with P/J pickups that had a jazz neck, these were branded as the Standard series and were out before the VM line was introduced.
I can think of more than a few reasons why it has a Jazz-spec'd neck, but they're a bit on the outlandish/unlikely side. Outside someone swapping necks and relabeling it, I can only guess that it was a factory-level error. Regardless, even if it's a Jazz neck, it has little impact on the body. If it's a VM, it'll likely take a Fender Standard guard.
On a related note, it's times like this I wish Fender/Squier hadn't decided to give no series-designation to their VM and CV lines. Rare as it may be, it makes proper identification a real headache, especially when I see so many mislabeled, used instruments up for sale. It irks me when someone tries to pass off a white VM Jazz as a CV to squeeze an extra $50+ out of someone who doesn't know better.
I suppose I shouldn't complain, though. I once got a used CV Jazz from Guitar Center for the price of a used VM…$205 and with a case to boot!
I agree, the only reason I knew my VM P bass pictured above was what it is, was because I had studied the VM line of basses. I see people all them time list Affinity's as Standards, even when it says Affinity right on the head stock.
I agree I don't see way some one would take the effort to swap out a p bass neck for a jazz neck & then spend the $$$ to place a p bass logo on it. Well then, like my CV Jazz find, it was probably an error that worked in your favor. It just took a while for "Life, the Universe and Everything" to finally deliver it into your hands! Awesome!!
As promised (some time ago) photos of my current stable of work basses. Granted, one is not a Squier...let's just call him my "foreign exchange student".
I had not played bass in years and started back about 3 years ago. Since then I have collected 4 Squiers. A black & white jazz, a candy apple red P,an all black PJ & and a brown MB5. C
an anyone tell me why it is so difficult to find a white Jazz or PJ 4string

I have had Squiers on and off for a long time. Once when I was first getting back into playing, an Affinity P was all I could afford. I used it until I bought an MIA J. Now I have two. I traded my VM J V in on this CV 60s P I bought 2 months ago. It is even better than I expected. The other was a pawn shop Affinity I picked up to mod for fun. It is currently in pieces awaiting refinishing.
My newest addition to the family. Gave her a set up and new strings and she plays quite nicely. Gonna add Custom Shop p/u's next.
One of the good things about working (or helping out) at a music shop, aside from getting stuff pretty much at cost, is sometimes you get stuff for free.

Squier J I'm playing in my profile pic. Bought it for $150 (with a Rumble 15 amp) on Craigslist. Lady bought the Jazz pack for her son, who decided he didn't want to play bass. I sold the amp for $50.
I bought it as a rehearsal space bass, but ended up liking it better than my MIM Fender Jazz. Plays and sounds great. Fantastic neck on this one.
It's traveled all around the Midwest, and even made a trip out to SanFran.
Here it is in action in 2014 with the band RED - A Tribute to Sammy Hagar at Argosy Casino in Alton, IL.

Here's my other new/old CV '51. The body used to be mine when it had the original neck on it. I then sold it to @Bglosh , who then harvested the neck for another bass. I missed that body, so I bought it back and put the Cabronita neck on it. Much more comfortable with Modern "C" shape and has some nice grain and tint to it. As a bonus, it came with the tort guard too. I dig it.
Guess I'm in. Just picked up a 2000 Squier Precision Bass Special. Wrote it up in another thread. Pawn shop special at $120. Had straplock buttons on, otherwise was stock. I've put on different knobs with a bit more bite in the knurling.
Everything is working as it should. Neck is nice and comfy. My first long scale bass in at least a decade.

Just found this thread. Here's my Standard Jazz. Bought it new about 8 years ago. I've got some Fender flats on there. A while back the tone pot went out, so I got a jazz wiring kit from Allparts.com and replaced all the electrics except the pickups. Had to replace the nobs too since the old ones didn't fit the new pots. Everything else is original.
