It's Indian Laurel. I did lemon oil it a few times, but it soaked it up immediately, each time!

It still plays just fine.

May I ask if that PG was original on that bass, or if it's aftermarket, where did you get it?

It looks good but I would stain the fb - something darker/richer looking. As long as the wood doesn't have coating on it, it should absorb well. I stained this fb with Watco - worked great. As your fb is lighter than what I started with, it may take two passes. Just let the 1st pass cure before adding another coat. Apply & wipe off - easy and looks great.

I swapped out the bridge on my new Paranormal '54 Jazz Bass for a new Fender High Mass bridge, which bolted right in. The original bridge had some rough-turning adjustment screws. This one is smooth as silk. It is quite heavy--very substantial. One thing that surprised me is that I had no issues adjusting the action low enough. In fact, I got it so low that I decided to raise it a bit because it was uncomfortable-feeling. And even at its lowest, I had room to drop it further. In fact, I could've lowered the strings right down onto the fretboard. No shim needed in the neck. Overall, a simple change. And that Fender High Mass bridge looks badass. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to get any pics.

How different does it sound from the original Bronco pickup? And what did you put in the PB50?

How different does it sound from the original Bronco pickup? And what did you put in the PB50?

The sound is noticeably warmer, fatter. Much fuller than the stock Start pickup. The output is hotter too. The Roswell is a moderately hot single coil.

I replaced the PB-50's pickup with a Bootstrap Palo Alto for '51 P. It's just a tad lower output and a touch more articulate. Not big differences, but noticeable. To me it was just right, not quite vintage, but not too hot.

Sounds like they are tryin to up sell you. Sell you something more expensive for more of a commission.

Yes, it looks a bit darker in that pic. I have a bass with a laurel fb and stained it darker - I like the figuring of laurel but also like a rich-looking wood. I stained it a bit darker and again- it looks great, very warm and visually inviting.

The FB on my Sonic P is quite dark (much darker than the Pao Ferro Fender uses on their MIM instruments), and indistinguishable from rosewood from over a foot away. The perloid dot inlays are a nice touch too.

FWIW I used Gerlitz Brand Guitar Honey and it worked really well on my late 60’s Squier with an Indian Laurel board. Used a very light coat and although I suspect the board is lightly sealed it made the grain “pop” pic Gerlitzed to the 12th fret.

Seems like a great product, I haven’t reapplied it at all, still holding it down.
