Now, having visited the web address, I like that the Zuck-book() listings are also on his site. The page's format isn't great for sorting, but as long as they keep them up to date, it's far better than nothing at all. And while they're too far away for me to visit, and are a bit out of the way coming back from my hometown, I always keep in mind that "weirder things have happened", so who knows?

I wish I could. I would love to visit that store and so many like it, but between starting a new job AND the need to purge a lot of extraneous gear, I can't even think about such a journey.

Now I'm thinking of I were to plan a holiday around stopping at independent music shops, where would I go? Preferably a place with good independent book and record shops, too.

Having taken the new Affinity active Jazz out a couple of times through different rigs, I am quite pleased with the stock pre and noiseless pickups. Both the bass and treble controls are strong but sweet, and the output although hot is controllable
To me anyway and for whatever it’s worth

The specs say the preamp boosts and cuts EQ. Does it bring about a noticeable shift and, if so, is the treble cut a fair-or-better equivalent for a tone knob?

I did post a picture on page 172
The treble boost/cut is just that and not like a tone control. It is an obviously active controller, and the con is that it’s difficult maybe impossible to get a passive sort of sound. One day I will try to see if I can bypass the pre. I’m curious what these noiseless pickups sound like passive.
Other con is the frets, needed a little smoothing out. But the finish is cherry and the weight is good and it makes nice sounds. And I like white pick guard lol

I can get this active J for about $60 a month for 6 months. I have a Hipshot bridge, Sadowsky vintage Tuners, Sadowsky knobs, ( stacked and standard) a Warwick Just-a-nut III, and a hipshot string tree all in the parts bin that’ll slap right onto this puppy. But I have all the basses I need. ( I know, like that ever stopped anyone) My concern is that the electrics are crapola, or it’ll be boat anchor heavy.

I’ve seen very little reviews on these from actual owners. But I got the GAS for it.

So, pull the trigger? Or take a couple days for the gas to subside…..

If it’s a dud, I’d love to know.

Got a great deal due to it being an open box floor model. Tried it out in the store and it was great! Took it home, gave it a polish and some new strings and you'd swear it was factory fresh.

I compared it against USA Fenders and...I think I hate Fender necks? The fretboard radius was insanely round. Plus the fretboard edges were so rounded off, it felt like the G string was behind the fretboard? I played the CV for a bit, then switched to the USA Fender to "see what I was missing" and IMMEDIATELY hated the Fender neck. I also didn't love the pickups on the Fender. They had more depth and were a bit more composed, but...the Squier had more life to them! That gives me more joy! I get why people might prefer the Fender pickups, but I'm a tacky bastard. I don't want composure, and if you'd ever met me in person, you'd know "depth" isn't one of my strong suits

So yeah I LIKED the CV, but then when I compared it to the Fender and hated the neck, and preferred the pickups of the CV, it was a total no-brainer.

THINGS I WOULD LIKE TO TWEAK BUT DON'T KNOW ENOUGH
- Bought a Fender HiMass bridge to put on because they're cheap enough that it's worth a shot. I couldn't quite get the action as low as I'd like so I suspect with a better bridge, I'll have more luck. My tech who will do a setup will probably do a better job anyway.

- Got new knobs on the way, gonna get the tech to replace the pots 'cos they feel a bit flimsy

- While looking online, I found a black, aluminium pickguard. In the photo it looked cool! But I couldn't find a picture of one on a Jazz Bass itself. Anybody got a pic of a black metal pickguard on a Jazz Bass?

- Quite like the tone I get out of this bass! But coming from a P, I think it could use slightly hotter pickups and a bit more midrange. Quitely considering just swapping out the neck pickup for something hotter. However, has anybody got a suggestion for hotter, middy (not MIDI. HA!) sounding neck pickups for a Jazz?

- At what point does it become boring to play RATM riffs on a Jazz Bass? So far that's all I'm doing. I am not sorry.

I had the exact same bass, and added a Sadowsky onboard Pre and side jack and it was SPECTACULAR. Mine was much older with the Alnico V Duncan Designs ( totally underrated pickup) and it was absolutely killer. Enjoy it. Very worthy of upgrade mods.

I got the blue one, the new Affinity right? I really like it. I had been looking for a Jazz for a while finally this one came along. The noiseless pickups and pre-amp brain are both sweet

Active affinity? I'm not the guy to talk anyone off the ledge, I have many basses (I just can't pass up a deal), I have heard the electronics are very useable as stock but I have no idea on the weight, it really looks nice though.

Honestly, asking for someone to talk you out of modding the hell out of an Affinity is an uphill climb. As long as the bones are solid, they make for excellent platforms for experimentation and upgrading. Who cares if the new parts cost more than the bass itself? I mean, really...what makes more sense; dropping a large chunk of change into something that costs several times more than the new parts OR spending a fraction of that money on a low-cost bass that is a solid foundation for those new parts?

So, no, I will not, seeing that it would be hypocritical. After all, this limited edition Affinity Jazz puts me in the same boat (...'cuz that bland, white pickguard simply must go, then it'll need a Drop-D tuner, and maybe a different bridge, and possibly some bolder pickups, and... )

Well if you do get it, please let us know what you think of the noiseless pickups and pre. I really like them but don’t have wide experience with the electronics that are available.
It just sounded and felt good when I tried it so I grabbed it up.
The pickup that came in my older Affinity P -Bass was not so great and I changed it out for a gift pickup that I was told is a Geezer. I’m probably a little more picky about the tone of a P than I am of Jazz’s having owned and played Precision’s for more time.
This Jazz is me branching out and trying for some more “modern” sounds.

I’m not a fan of vintage sounding basses. All mine are are equipped with noiseless, modern electrics. I’ve also owned several expensive single coil basses, and after A/B’ing them against the ones I tend to keep in my stable, I usually end up getting rid of them. The only reason I was so interested in this model was the price, and that I had a bunch of farkles in the parts bin that woulda really upgraded the hardware.

The seed to this whole inquiry was a recent repair job I did for a friend of mine that recently purchased this……

It came with sharp fret edges, and a poor setup. I dropped a $23 guyker bridge on it to perfectly center the strings over the pickup poles ( a peeve of mine) I filed the fret ends flush then rounded them with my fret file, I had a bunch of Sadowsky metro express and Hipshot tuners in my parts bin, so I put them on, along with a polished chrome string tree, straplocks, and a set of Elixirs.

After setup, it plays beautifully, like a far more expensive bass. And honestly the aesthetics were really spectacular. Beautiful maple board. And Headstock, the great Olympic white finish with the black guard. It was very impressive. The only shortcoming….the electrics. The sound was the biggest shortcoming. The fix was, I could put it thru my Zoom B3 pedal, and with the Eden amp sim, it came alive. I demo’d the bass thru the B3 to the owner and he too, was thrilled with the sound. So I gave him the pedal. ( I have 3, they’re too good to not have a few)

Now, while i was doing the work on his bass, and identical P/J came up on FB Marketplace nearby for $200. I setup a buy for it, then after hearing his finished bass, I thought….why? I have 3 basses I love and really dont need another bass.

Well, regret is a strong emotion. So, after i finished his, I saw the seller had dropped his price to $175. I went back to him, and it was traded away. Regret.

But now, cooler heads are prevailing and once again, I’m asking myself…why?

So, I’m thinkin I’ll cool out. I know it’d likely be a very nice piece after i finished it, but I simply don’t need another bass. Bygones for the rambling and flip flopping. ( Imagine how my wife feels).

GAS/GAS-quelling question: I have a Squier Vintage Modified 77 Jazz Bass but am tempted by a Fender Player II Jazz Bass currently discounted at the Fender Certified Pre-Owned shop. Has anyone compared a Squier Vintage Modified / Classic Vibe with a Player II? Would there be much difference?

My reasonable brain keeps saying I already have a nice playing Jazz Bass, no need for another. My unreasonable brain thinks, "Oh, sunburst."

It's probably just the honeymoon period talking but I am totally digging this bass. The weird geometry choices (short scale neck, big body, lots of booty behind the bridge) fit me like they were made with me in mind. And I am over the moon with the tones it produces with the stock strings. I found the lightest one I could (9.23lbs) and have some Gotoh Resolites on the way to drop a bit of weight off it (although the stock tuners seem surprisingly good for the price point). It has me looking/watching for another that is even lighter as I think I would enjoy flats on one as well. If you're parting with a light one, or know of a storefront with a light one, hit me up I've posted a wanted ad and am scouring Reverb for ads with weights.

I've heard nothing but good about these basses. Congrats! What is the weight of the one you have? It's hard to know what "lighter" is without a starting point.
