I saw somewhere someone talked about getting one that was 8.1 or 8.2 lbs (IIRC) so I'm hoping to find one around 8.75lbs or less. That was always my preferred weight for a full sized bass (lighter is better all other things being equal, but anything 8.75lbs or less was comfortable for me).
Personally, I think the Squier '77 Jazz looks cooler. If the two basses feel similarly playable, and the '77 is already full of hardware and electronics that can be switched out at one's leisure, the only reason there is to get a Sunburst would be to feed the GAS-beast.
My VM 77 neck is one of the nicest necks
I have played, bound & blocked and super comfy it just feels good in my hands, so much so I wouldn't trade it for a player if that helps.
It does help, thanks. There were only a couple of choices at the small shop where I bought it (and the more affordable used basses at the local GC had issues), but I definitely liked the VM 77's neck the most. (The shop owner was pushing a Schecter PJ4, but the VM 77 was much more comfortable and considerably lighter).
I didn't intend on trading it, but to have one with rounds and one with flats. The VM 77 came set up with new flats (D'Addario Chromes), so I've kept them. I like them but am concerned I'm not learning to avoid string squeak enough. Maybe a better option is something like a Classic Vibe P-Bass, put flats on it, and rounds on the VM 77 Jazz.
I gotcha, my '77 wears Fender flats (they are home) but nice to have options. I am a fan of the Classic Vibes, great basses! Have you considered the super budget friendly Squier Debut Amazon exclusive? Amazon.com
I grabbed a Dakota Red version, a solid budget minded bass and they do have a sunburst, these all have matte finishes but this would give you an option for rounds, I

It sounds like a wise decision, to me. Cool looks and a better ergonomic fit compared to other options.
The great thing about strings is they’re a completely reverible mod. Aside for having to employ a bit o’ elbow grease, the only thing you might have to do is give the truss rod a little tweak to compensate for differences in string tension. Plus, if you only have one bass you know intimately, any change to the sound and/or feel will be quickly apparent. (I love my other basses, but there are days I yearn for that simplicity.

And coming from wind instruments, sometimes the simplicity of a single instrument (for each type) is nice. At other times, like when you need to take it for more involved repair/maintenance, it can feel like part of you is missing.

I snapped a couple of very amateur pics of my Squier Paranormal Jazz Bass with its new red tort pickguard. It has a slightly more orange tint in these pics as compared to real life, if a bass player can be considered to know anything about a real life.
This is coming along swimmingly.
Im working the fretless neck now. Going to Colormatched the headstock, new decal, hardware. Gonna be a beauty.

Got this as a mod platform as I’ve been trying to get a fretless with the full mwah, bloom, singing tone I hear in my head. Ended up attempting this pseudo Tony Franklin. Got the bass used off FB Marketplace for $178 and went to town.

- DiMarzio Model p and model J pickups,
- Hipshot ultralite tuner and string tree
- Brass saddle vintage bridge
- genuine fender chrome cover
- Tort guard
This thing sings. Turned out way better than expected. Very very pleased.

If you have the means, and if it isn't too much trouble, could you check to see what it's nut-width and fretboard radius is, please? The sellers only give so much information and with a possible language barrier, I'd like to know as much as possible before buying.
I love my Squier Precision (P/J). Often, even when I don't have time to practice/write/record or just play, I'll see it on the stand and I just have to pick it up and play a few lines.

Jockomo Vinyl stickers. I've used them on several basses, and even up close nobody could tell the difference. Super easy to apply, they stay put, don't wear out, can't feel them and are easily removed if you want.

You know how some fretless basses just sound like a fretted bass without frets? Then some sing and mwah just by holding a note? This neck is like the Latter. I have a Sire Z7 ( going back to sweetwater) and a Ibanez Willis 5. This sings more than the both of em. Crazy.
