If it was a 'Japanese import only' bass at that time it's very possible. Best evidence would be a pic of the neck-pocket. I own a 'Japanese import only' early 2000's ESP so it seems to me that after years the used ones eventually leak into the US market place.
Maybe not in the US, but they were available in New Zealand in the 1990s in this colour (as well as black). Mine was red with a w/b/w pickguard and the same decal on a satin neck. Virtually indistinguishable from the later MIJ Fender Standard.
Exactly - world wide distribution of product and colours targeted to each destination. Happens for many international products.

It is very cool. This one has some fire damage that made it very affordable (not that they go for crazy huge sums anyway). It's a blast to play and sounds great to boot.

No. All the squier bullets are 34. The fender bullet had a 30" bullet and 34" bullet deluxe. I'd love to get ahold of a short scale
Wasn't aware of all that. When looked it up, the ss Bullet goes for a healthy price these days. (north if 1K) I couldn't find what they sold for new, but they were sold as a 'budget' bass in the early-mid '80s so I'm guessing around $300?
They were only made for about a year (1982), they are fairly unique, they've never been reissued, and that era of instrument is becoming somewhat sought/collectible. I think there are better deals on squier vista musicmasters or Japan made mustangs if in pursuit of a good short scale that isn't in production. I actually ran across this when looking for a vista musicmaster. The bullet was a better deal due to body damage.
Needs a new output jack, pickguard is a bit bowed like it wasn't quite made for the bass, mismatched pickguard and ashtray cover screws and plenty of hum!As long as the bass looks, feels, plays and sounds great... the rest is just details.
Hmm.....stripped it down and it had no bridge ground wire. The harness didn't look original unless the Japanese solder way worse than me and I can't see that. Would the pickups have vintage cloth wire or PVC like these pickups? Pictures of the harness below and of the neck. Could this be a fake Squier Made in Japan or just modified terribly?
