With my VM Jazz, I generally cut the highs and mid-highs a little to cut back on the natural brightness of the bass.

I also boost the lows and mid-lows a little to bring out the bottom end.

If I'm looking for a "dirty" sound I turn-on/up the VLE setting a little.

Some of this may depend on what kind of strings you are using. Right now I'm using Fender black nylon wound strings. But, I've been thinking about replacing them with DR Black Beauties.

Try it and let me know what you think.

I just "laced-up" a set of DR Black Beauties on my VM Jazz and so far I am very pleased. The sound is fuller and I seem to be able to get more felxibility with the tone controls on the bass. Also, the coating seems to keep the finger noise down. I think they're keepers.

After changing the strings I was also amazed at how dead the Fender nylon wounds had become...they're "only" 7 months old.

I bought this exact model just so I could rebuild it.

I played the Mexender f-less jazz in the store and the kid who works there said "hey try this".

The squier was a great bass for the money.

It still had a dead spot on the neck. 4th position g-string.

I bought it knowing the neck, bridge, pickups had to be replaced with quality products.

I'm waiting on the neck to come in.

68' jazz neck tele bass head stock maple / pau ferro board.

Dimarzio bridge p/u - I don't mind the neck p/u so it's going to stay.

Gotoh bolt in replacement bridge, and a hip shot x-tender.

This axe will now hold up to the hard playing I do.

Ebonol is less than perfected. Ebony or other hard woods are proven.

From here on out I'm going to buy bodies and start from there.

I liked this bass because I play it at rehearsals while waiting for parts to come in..

I have a Squire p special. 5 years old, stuff gets loose on it every once in a while but a tightening up fixes that.
I never use the bridge pup and it sounds great.
People are disappointed when they ask about it or get close enough to find out it's not a Fender.

It was indeed a great deal for me. For the five years I've played bass, I've only had one- a faithful MIM Jazz. So once I got my first paycheck, I immediately went to GC. The bass was beautifully set up. I like the pickups fine, but a new bridge is definitely in order for it, and my other bass. As far as the neck, I've been planning to keep rounds on it, I think I like the round sound better. If it actually damages the neck beyond playability, I'll get the fretboard dressed and switch to halfs.

EDIT: as you'll notice in the last picture, I did mod it a bit- it's got that fourth knob. Not really sure what it does yet, but it sounds great!5
