those are great ! fat tone with more treble and bass (less mids)
really fat tone ! the first thing i did with my new cheap p was putting a split p in ! zero hum, higher output and fat sound out of the cheapo !

I got my VMJ in Feb 08. I have gigged with it through my Markbass CMD102P combo and I'm very happy w it.
I had replaced the knobs with regular J bass ones. Then I realized that I rather like the stock ones, so I put them back on.

About time I got a pic!

Fender MIM P-Bass for R&B, Motown (black pickguard, black screws, D'Addario Flats)
Peavey Cirrus BXP for Rock (GHS Boomers),
Squire VM Jazz for Blues (Fender Black Tapewounds, black pickguard screws, Fender Jazz Knobs, tuned down a half-step).

I want to join the club. Is this ok? Here is my modified Squier VM Jazz. I replaced all the Alpha pots with Japanese made pots, completely shielded the cavities with aluminum foil over conductive paint, did a better rewiring and star grounding, added original Fender bridge and pickup covers, thumbrest and knobs, and put on Dean Markley roundwound nickel. This bass is dead silent with lots of punch and growl.

kenjikun, the covers are exactly what I had planned for my VMJ when it comes home. I wasn't going to use the bridge cover with the F and I haven't decided on the thumbrest or not but this does look as killer as I hoped it would ^_^ You got a real sweet one with that nice wood grain pattern there. ^_^

Mega squier GAS because of you...

I want one of those VMs, they look and sound incredible. how do they play?

Let me share a short history of this bass. I actually bought this two weeks ago as second-hand bass at Yahoo Auction Japan. (no e-bay here:D). The seller bought it last January 2008 for 45,000 YEN but said it was hard to play so he is selling it for 25,000 YEN only. He never used it so it was as good as new. So I bought it without actually seeing the condition of the bass, just a gamble on my part. When it arrived, I was shocked to see that the action was very high. It's unplayable! Now I realized that the bass was never set-up and the owner didn't know how to do so. So I began my mods. After two full clockwise turn of the truss rod, and a little bridge saddle adjustments, the action was perfect! Yeah, with its typical thin and narrow jazz neck and low action, playability is amazing. So far I never observed any dead notes, sustain is good despite the standard low mass bridge. Then I completely shielded the pickup and control cavities with aluminum foil, replaced the alpha pots with Made in Japan pots and re-wired the controls neatly and star grounded everything. To complete the package, I added original Fender bridge and pickup covers, control knobs and thumbrest to get that 1975 Fender Jazz-look. I also replaced the stock strings with Dean Markley rounds. The Seymour Duncan-designed pickups are winner. wires are covered with cloth for that vintage-look. With neck pickup only and tone rolled-down, you can get that James Jamerson Motown sound; with tone roll-up, kinda P-bass sound; with both pickups and tone full, you get that classic Jazz bass growl. The sound is so bright that slap and pop is ear shattering. I maybe exaggerated but that's my observation. Perhaps the very bright sound is due to the maple fingerboard body.Some user said they experience neck-dive, so far I have never experienced it yet but this baby is quiet heavy compared to P-bass. I'm very happy with this bass and gonna keep it.
