so i have a couple squiers already but im getting a couple bills next week and i think i might get something new. im trying to decide between the vm jazz 77' or the cv 50's P. (or possibly a cv jazzmaster
) i went to GC but no luck with either, they had the lpb 50's p but i want the natural one if i go for it. anyone have both or have had them? anyone use flats on them? what do you guys think of the 50's p? and i have the natural vm J so i know what im getting if i go with the jazz.

Yes I have both. The Butterscotch Blonde CV is cool. I have had it for ten days and put flats on it 3 bays ago. It sounds really thumpy and the action is really low. The bridge has a little wider string spacing which you have to get used to and the neck isn't as easy to play as the J, thicker and wider at the nut. The Glossy neck of course feels a little sticky when your hands are clean, but some car wax will help that.
Mine is very nicely made and finished and a joy to behold.Some have called the p'up weak but mine is about 1/4 " away from the strings and I can't play it on my V4-B at the same amp volume setting as the Jazz, it overdrives the pre sections like crazy, have to back it down to about 3/4 vol on the bass and EQ some bass out on the amp. Immediate punch at the strike of a note, unsophisticated and snarly from the single pole pieces directly under the strings, wonderful. A bit of hum with that fat single coil, but that's par for the course. The flats are still really bright with this pickup if you want them to be. Love this bass.
Love the VMJ for all the opposite reasons. I keep rounds on it. Now I have two completely different basses in feel, tonal qualities, and sound. Sublime.

thanks i appreciate the response. I usually roll off all the treble with the tone knob, does the 50's p get muddy at all? do you think i could get a good dub sound with it?
Not muddy as in say, my Epi Bird muddy. Still nice note definition going on with that old tuba kinda vibe and kinda fuzzy if that makes sense. Roll a little high back in and the punch comes right back. I'm certainly not an expert in bass tone but I know what I like. Still bugs me that some have called the pu's anemic. Guitar World mag put these head to head with Fender 51 RI on youtube and I couldn't hear much difference. If you want a totally different character, then look at a pup swap. But I think you'll love this bass once you get your hands on one. It's purty. Invalid Link Removed

Snagged a Squier Classic Vibe 60's Jazz Bass over the weekend.. The local GC had a sale and I couldn't pass it up. Hell of a great bass for the price!
i went to sam ash today and demo'd the 77 and the 50's p. the 77 was an anchor, and the neck wasnt as satisfying as my other vm jazz. im definitely geting the blonde 50's p. i liked the punchiness of it and the neck was nice, though i am not totally stoked on the frets.

When you say not stoked with the frets do you mean the tiny size? I know what you mean but I like the way they feel with flats. But in 51 that's the size of frets they used... from the banjo dept., hence classic vibe.
Perhaps you should seek out another '77 to try...
The link you posted took me to a page for a Jazzmaster guitar...is that what you indended to point to?
I haven't really done any research in that area, but my first concern would be figure out who makes pickups that would fit... 4 String Jazz pickups come in two lengths, I'm not sure about ones for 5 string Jazz basses.
Yeah all my other squiers are vms and i think they have taller frets. i didnt really dislike them just a departure from the norm.
well i already have the natural vm jazz and its my main player because its so comfortable. i just felt that the 77 i tried was nowhere near it in terms of comfort. and yes the link i posted is to a new squier jazzmaster, i already have 4 squier basses so i can justify getting a guitar

Something interesting going on in Squier land. I just went to the Squier site as I often do and it is gone! On Googling, all the links that come up (a lot of what come up are now 404's on Fender) now lead you directly to the Fender site and all the Squiers are now there! I bet that Fender is so proud of the quality of Squier instruments that they now consider them to be actual Fenders, entry level pricing, yes but real Fenders, just like I do.
EDIT: Well at least as real a Fender as an MIM or Japan. The only TRUE Fenders IMHO are the ones made when Leo was still on the board!

Considering their build quality, some CVs and VMs are better than MIMs, they should have been in the Fender site a long time ago. Good stuff!
