I have a 60’s CV P fiesta red and the Matt Freeman P (70’s style P). Both are made in China. I keep flats on the 60’s P and stainless rounds on the 70’s, so it’s not a fair comparison tone wise. But the 60’s does seem warmer and rounder sounding. It should also be noted that the nut width on the 60’s is the wide P width, where the 70’s is the typical width most of us are used to with modern P basses. And the 60’s P has vintage fret wire, so there are some neck differences. My advice is that if you have the option to buy either at a fair price, do it.
A Matt Freeman P came up for sale locally about 5 years ago and I still regret not buying it. I’ve had a couple newer Fender US P basses within the last few years and I kept the Chinese CV’s over the US Fenders after doing side-by-side comparisons.
Don’t get me wrong... I’m not saying the MIC CV’s are better than US Fenders. I just preferred the sound and feel of the CV’s, so I let the US basses go.
