It's because of how they are wired. Many older dual pick up guitars were factory wired this way. Forget the exact term, but I seem to remember it being called "50's wiring".

That's what Gretsch told me, too, when I called. I'm leaving it as-is because I don't wan to modify this bass, at all.

Today I changed the stock strings on my Jaguar, putting on D'Addario ECB82 Medium Gauge Chromes in stead (my first string change ever...), and if I had known that the result would be so significant (will be even more when those strings really settle, which can take some months), I would have put on a Hipshot or Schaller retrofit bridge as well, the original bridge having no "guide grooves" to keep the saddles "in line", thus causing the E and A string to be a bit out of line with the pups. Well, I'll do that with the next change of strings... within twenty years or so!:D

So, logically, after the new strings will have settled, it will be better than better than great, and if someday I change the bridge, it might... well, I even don't know how this instrument will age: will the neck still be straight? Will the stock machine heads hold out?
Anyway, it has a distinct "voice" right now, and I like that voice. But every instrument should have its voice: if one's only goal is "I want a deep note", than a synth could do as well. And probably cheaper.

Do that! No seriously, if I could justify a Stingray, I'd do it too. But these Squiers are really nice bases, especially when you consider the price. A really great starting point and a couple hundred later you still have something that is cheaper and better than a mim Fender judging by reviews of them on TB.

Today I put in an unloaded blend pot on the jazz. I like so far, wish I could have found a linear taper tho'.

Hello VM Club.

I just bought the VM TB. I'm curious, does it come installed with 250k, or 500k pots? If theres a way to make it even MUDDIER (IE put in 250k pots) I'm inclined to do it.

Also, I'm having a difficult time intonating the E string with that 2 saddle bridge; does the USA Fender bridge drop right in and allow for string-thru? Will the tone change significantly without those brass saddles?

After that I can get a bridge cover. And maybe a tug bar. Or vintage tuners, and an orange drop cap.... (infected by the modding bug)

The electrical theory has something to do with passing more of the high freqs to ground than a .047uF cap will do.

I added a .100uF cap on a toggle switch so I can call it in or out and the stock tone pot can control either quite well.

So - I can go from stock .047uF to .100uF cap instantly and still have control of the amount of tone that I want at the mo.

Not too sure of the cut-off point, freq-wise though.
