Squier Vintage Modified Precision V: who's got one?

I put a set of Ultralights on mine, nice weight reduction, but I like them for the accuracy and how they hold tune.

FYI, the s/n and Fender logo on the back of the headstock are not under the poly on the back of the headstock. They're on top of it. Be careful if doing any touch-up sanding there!

If you like the tuners on the MIM Fenders, then you'll like the Squier's just fine. But I've been playing basses with good enclosed gears for most of the last 30 years, and I just don't have the patience to deal with cheap elephant ear tuners.

The stock tuners usually have a fair amount of slack, and the stiffness is pretty variable. I have a pictorial on TB that shows how to re-tension the springs to even them up, but they'll still never feel as smooth and precise as the Hipshots.

Well I bought one and it was a beautiful white, but I've had a hankerin for sonic blue and a sherwood green P basses, so I painted a couple of basses. I'll be putting the green one together in the next few days with tuners and pickups from the TB classifieds. The blue one is assembled already also with tuners and pickups (G&L P and HBs, Ultralites) purchased from here on the TB forums. TB classifieds have not been kind to my wallet :p

Just picked mine up today from GC ship to store. It all looks pretty good and sorting it out. The only thing that has me a little concerned is the way that the 3rd string is centered. Not too well versed in 5 strings but shouldn't it be right down the middle. It's the nut slot actually. It's a good 3mm cut to the treble side. Anyone else checked theirs?

Edit: OK, I get it....since the strings are of different diameters the centers will be different in order to maintain proper string spacing, Right?

I am very pleased with the fit, finish, and overall quality of my P5. I think it compares very favorably to the Skyline 55-64 I had last year. Tonally, it has a perfect P-bass tone. It is not as easy to play as my Cirrus, but my Cirrus would be a $2K+ bass if it were still being made.

This bass is the nicest Squier I have ever played by a wide margin. I do not think I will buy a higher end P5.

I agree with Dr Cheese's statements about quality. This bass is a great deal for a P5.

I have noticed the original pickup (which I see no reason to change) is picky about height adjustment. If you have a tone issue with the pickup, I recommend adding some additional foam beneath the pickup to keep it tight against the mounting screws, and be prepared to spend a little time getting it dialed in. It's worth it.

As stated earlier, I'm a 4 Banger forcing myself into this 5 string deal. I think I made a good choice. This neck is really well finished off. Nicely rolled edges and zero fret ends poking out. The G is a little chimey sounding and the center strings were a bit weak so I raised the pups to match the radius more.
I originally ordered a sunburst one but its missed its arrival date from Squier to GC so I had them send me the white one in stock. My scale appears inaccurate since I get anything from 8.5 to 10 lbs. Most consistently around 9.5. She hangs pretty well though.
I'm wondering...is neck dive going to be worse on the lighter ones?

I played my P5 at rehearsal today. Usually, I play the same no matter what bass I have, but this time, the pillowy tone of my Precision just made me think differently than the high midrange punch of my Cirrus. I found channeling Jamerson as much as someone of my modest ability is capable of echoing. All I know is that the music minister had a smile on his face that my Fred Hammond licks never create!

I have a chronic back condition, so I obsess about weight. I've noticed that the majority of VM P5's on Sweetwater seem to come in around 9-9.5lb, with the odd outlier down in the low 8's, or up over 10lb.

I finally pulled the trigger on one locally, that weighed 8lb 12oz. I dropped that to 8lb 6oz with a set of the licensed Hipshot Ultralites. That's under 8 1/2lb, and almost as light as my Dingwall.
